NIT Student Guide Kenya · 2026/2027
Can I Change My Course After Joining College in Kenya?
Change direction with a clear academic and fee plan.
A practical guide for students already enrolled: check eligibility, submit the internal request, review completed learning, confirm fees and report to the approved programme.
Before you move
Can I change my course after joining college?
Yes. You can apply to change your course after joining college in Kenya. If the new course is in the same university or TVET institution, the institution handles the programme change through its relevant academic office, department or faculty. KUCCPS confirms that the internal inter-programme process is handled by the institution. For degree programmes, the applicable admission requirements and programme cut-off points still apply. [1]
The same-college process may be described as an inter-programme, intra-institutional or inter-faculty transfer. Start with Admissions or the Registrar using your student number, current course and intended course. [1]
Before moving classes, get four things confirmed: approval, the intake or reporting date, the revised fee position and the learning you still need to complete.
Identify the correct route
Changing course and changing college use different processes
Start with one question: are you staying in the same institution or moving to another one? KUCCPS separates intra-institutional programme changes from inter-institutional transfers. [1]
| Your situation | Process |
|---|---|
| Different course, same institution | Internal / inter-programme course change |
| Different institution | Admission or KUCCPS inter-institutional transfer route, where applicable |
| Finished one qualification and moving to the next level | Academic progression |
| Not yet enrolled and still choosing what to study | Course-selection process |
If you are moving to another institution through direct admission, use the NIT guide on joining college without KUCCPS. For qualification progression, use the Artisan to Certificate to Diploma guide or the D Plain to Diploma guide. If you have not enrolled, use the guide to choosing the right skill.
Check before applying
Confirm that you qualify for the new course
Take the full name of the intended programme to Admissions and establish these points before submitting the request:
Confirm the academic and other requirements for the intended course.
Confirm the qualification level and assessment route you will join.
Confirm the class, intake and date on which the approved change takes effect.
Confirm practicals, projects, assessments and attachment still required.
For degree programmes, the institution must continue to observe the applicable admission requirements and programme cut-off points when considering the transfer. [1]
Practical process
How do I change my course after joining college?
- Go to Admissions or the Registrar
Provide your student name and number, current course, intended course, current intake or stage of training, and academic records where required. Record the submission date, documents required and the office that issues the decision. KUCCPS places the internal programme change with the institution. [1]
- Confirm eligibility
Check entry requirements, qualification level, the available intake, starting date, remaining duration and practical requirements.
- Submit the request
Use the approved form, student portal, email or written application. State the current course, requested course, current stage and a brief reason. Attach the records listed in the institution’s procedure and keep the acknowledgement or reference.
- Review completed learning
Give the academic department your results, unit records and assessment evidence so completed learning can be compared with the new curriculum.
- Confirm the revised fees
Take your fee statement or receipts to Finance and obtain the revised account position for the intended programme.
- Receive approval and join
Keep the approval, new intake or reporting date, learning plan, fee statement and remaining practical or attachment requirements together.
Academic review
What happens to the units or learning I have already completed?
Ask the academic department one specific question: Which completed learning is recognised, and what remains for me to complete in the new course?
KNQA’s Kenya Credit Accumulation and Transfer System (KCATS) provides for mobility between programmes and the recognition and transfer of eligible periods of study. The credit decision depends on factors including the institution, programme, learner’s entry qualifications and volume of learning. [2]
- Units or credits recognised
- Units still to be completed
- Outstanding practical work
- Assessments remaining
- Project requirements
- Attachment requirements
- Class or intake to join
- Expected completion date
Timing
Can I change course soon after joining or after the first semester?
Soon after joining
- Yes. Begin the institution’s internal course-change procedure as soon as you know the programme you want.
- Admissions or the Registrar confirms whether you meet the new course requirements and which intake or class you can join.
- Complete the approval, fee review and reporting instructions before moving to the new class. [1]
After the first semester
- Yes. Submit the course-change request together with your semester results and assessment records.
- The academic review establishes your eligibility and identifies completed learning that can be considered for the new programme.
- The institution then confirms the intake you will join, the learning still to complete and your revised completion date.
Financial review
What happens to fees already paid when I change course?
Finance issues a revised account position for the new programme. Keep that statement with the course-change approval and learning plan.
| Financial item | What the revised statement records |
|---|---|
| Payments already received | Amount currently recorded on your account |
| Previous tuition | How the institution applies the payments already made |
| New programme fee | Applicable cost of the intended course |
| Registration and assessment | Any revised charges linked to the new programme |
| Tools or materials | Additional course-specific items where applicable |
| Balance | Amount remaining after the account is adjusted |
| Payment dates | Dates for settling the revised balance |
Newton Institute of Technology demonstration
Practical example: Full-Stack Software Development to Cybersecurity
Consider a student already enrolled in Full-Stack Software Development at Newton Institute of Technology who decides to move to Cybersecurity.
8 months of institutional training followed by a compulsory industrial attachment of at least 3 months. Published institutional fee: KSh 90,000. [4]
6 months of institutional training followed by a compulsory 3-month attachment. Published institutional fee: KSh 60,000. Linux forms part of the practical training environment. [5]
The student’s file should show the approved programme, intake, revised fee position, recognised learning, remaining assessments and attachment requirements.
How the NIT course change is handled
- 1. Report the intended change to NIT Admissions
Provide the student number, current programme, intended programme, current training stage and available academic or assessment records. NIT Admissions confirms the programme requirements, available intake and application steps. [6]
- 2. Get the academic plan for Cybersecurity
The review establishes eligibility, the intake to join, recognised learning, remaining Cybersecurity units, labs, assessments, completion date and attachment requirements.
- 3. Get the revised NIT fee position
Finance prepares the student’s actual account position, recording payments already received, how they are applied, the applicable programme fee, revised charges, balance and payment dates. [4][5]
- 4. Move to the approved class
Join the approved Cybersecurity intake on the reporting date stated in the decision and follow the revised academic and attachment plan.
Your working record
What should the final course-change approval tell you?
A complete approval identifies the programme you are moving into, the intake or class, reporting date, recognised learning, outstanding training and assessments, revised fee position, and any attachment or funding updates linked to the new programme.
Update funding records
How do I update HELB, scholarship or bursary records?
If your studies are supported through the Higher Education Financing system, take the approved course-change documentation to the institution’s funding office. HEF states that a student can continue benefiting from the Variable Scholarships and Loans Funding / New Funding Model after transferring from one university, college or faculty to another, provided the transfer is validated by KUCCPS. [3]
The funding office confirms the documents required to update your programme record and the effective date. For a county bursary, employer sponsorship or another funding arrangement, send the approved course-change details to the relevant sponsor.
Course-change file
Keep these records together before reporting to the new programme
This gives you one clear record of the academic, financial and administrative parts of the move.
- Course-change application or reference
- Confirmation that you meet the new course requirements
- Approval decision
- Academic learning plan
- Revised fee statement
- New intake and reporting date
- Remaining practical, assessment and attachment requirements
- Updated funding record where applicable
Use the official form first
