Which TVET level fits your KCSE grade?
If you scored D− or E, begin by checking Level 4 courses. A grade of D or D+ points to Level 5, while C− or C meets the general entry range for Level 6 diplomas. The exact course may still ask for a subject grade or another condition.

A TVET level describes the depth of training and the responsibility expected from a graduate. It does not promise a salary, a job or an easier course.

What Levels 4, 5 and 6 prepare you to do
The level rises with the complexity of the work. A learner can enter at the level allowed by the KCSE result or progress through a relevant lower qualification.
Artisan Certificate
Level 4 focuses on carrying out defined occupational tasks safely and correctly using the appropriate tools, equipment and procedures.

Craft Certificate

The detail many applicants miss
Why can a Level 5 course ask for D+ instead of D?
The table gives the general entry floor. An individual programme can set a higher mean grade, require a particular subject or add an age, medical, identification or licensing condition.
Use the general grade to find your level—then check the course itself
Health, engineering, teacher-training and regulated professional programmes are common examples. A C− may meet the general diploma threshold while a specific diploma asks for C Plain, Mathematics or a science subject.
A step-by-step route
Can you move from Level 4 to a diploma?
Yes. You normally progress within a related field and meet the admission conditions at each stage.
Build the artisan foundation and complete the required assessment.
Develop deeper craft and technical competence in the related occupation.
Enter specialised diploma training after meeting the progression rules.
Progression is not automatic across unrelated courses. Ask the admitting institution to confirm whether your earlier qualification is accepted.
How training is organised
Course duration and CBET assessment
How long does each level take?
There is no single duration for every Level 4, 5 or 6 course. It depends on the curriculum, learning hours, occupational units, attachment, assessment plan and the learner’s previous qualification.
Ask for the complete course structure instead of relying on a general promise that every certificate or diploma takes the same time.
What does CBET require?
Competency-Based Education and Training requires the learner to demonstrate the occupational task—not only attend class for a set period.

Entry, training, examination and endorsement requirements depend on the applicable NTSA class.

A college advert is only a starting point. Confirm the institution and programme before you travel, pay or buy equipment.
- The institution’s current TVETA registration status.
- Approval for the exact course—not just the institution.
- The assessment or awarding body.
- The full qualification name and KNQF level, where applicable.
- The attachment, complete fee and progression arrangements.
Straight answers
Common questions about TVET levels in Kenya
Can I join a TVET college with D−?
Yes. D− falls within the common KUCCPS entry band for Level 4 artisan programmes. You may also qualify for trade and short-course options that use different entry rules.
Which TVET level accepts D Plain?
D Plain meets the general minimum requirement for Level 5 craft-certificate programmes. The exact programme may add a subject grade or another condition.
Can I take a diploma with D+?
Not through the standard direct-entry route. A D+ learner can begin at Level 5 and progress to a related Level 6 diploma after completing the accepted qualification.
What is the minimum grade for Level 6?
The general minimum direct-entry grade is KCSE C−. Some diploma programmes require C Plain or particular subject grades.
Can I move from Level 4 to Level 6?
Yes. The normal route is Level 4, then a related Level 5 qualification, followed by application to the relevant Level 6 programme.
Are short courses classified as Level 4, 5 or 6?
Not automatically. Confirm the registered qualification code, KNQF level and assessment body. Course length alone does not determine the level.
