Courses for D− in Kenya: What Can You Study After KCSE?
Start with the correct Level 4 route, compare practical course options and learn how a KCSE D− can lead towards work, self-employment or a higher qualification.
Which TVET level accepts a KCSE D−?
KUCCPS uses the following general entry points for degree and TVET placement. This is the first check to make before comparing individual course names.
The mean grade is only the first condition
An individual programme may ask for a particular subject, National ID, minimum age, medical document or licence history. Always read the exact programme requirements.
A D− student should therefore begin with Artisan or Level 4 programmes. Some practical courses use their own admission rules, but the college must explain whether the result is a recognised national qualification, a trade test, a licence or an institutional certificate.

Do not rely on the word “certificate”
A certificate may describe a Level 4 qualification, Level 5 qualification, NITA trade test, industry credential or the college’s own completion document. Ask for the exact level and awarding body.
Building, construction and repair courses
Construction and repair trades provide some of the clearest Level 4 routes for a learner with D−. They also make it easier to judge a college because the training facilities and completed work can be inspected.
Learn wiring, testing, electrical safety and basic fault diagnosis. Check for working training boards, instruments, tools and qualified supervision.
Study water supply, drainage, sanitary fittings, pipe installation and repairs for homes, institutions and construction projects.
Practise measuring, cutting, joining and finishing metal components used in gates, windows, tanks, vehicle bodies and structures.
Learn setting out, wall construction, plastering, finishing and safe handling of building materials.
Build skill in measurement, cutting, assembly, roofing, furniture and building fittings.
Study servicing, engines, brakes, suspension and basic vehicle electrical systems using real workshop equipment.
A practical course should leave you able to complete a task—not merely explain it in an examination.
Can you study ICT with a D−?
Yes. Current KUCCPS listings include ICT Level 4 programmes whose minimum mean-grade requirement accommodates low KCSE grades. A student who has rarely used a computer can begin with Computer Packages and build from there.

Ask whether the programme is a nationally recognised Level 4 qualification, an industry certification or an institutional short course. Each can be useful, but they do not offer the same academic progression.
Beauty, food, fashion and agriculture
A D− can also open practical routes built around client service, production and small-business skills.
Hairdressing, Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology reward hygiene, repeated practice, client care and a strong service portfolio.
Look for practical cookery, hygiene, kitchen organisation, stock handling and costing—not a classroom-only course.
Learn machine operation, measurement, patterns, cutting and clean garment construction using functioning equipment.
Match crop, livestock, poultry, dairy, irrigation or farm-business training to opportunities in your area.
Useful training should combine communication, filing, customer care and basic computer work that can be assessed.
Investigate the actual work route before enrolling. A good-sounding title is not enough evidence of opportunity.
Plant operation, forklift and driving
These courses do not always follow the ordinary KCSE-to-Level 4 route. Age, National ID, medical fitness, vehicle category and NTSA licensing conditions may matter more than the KCSE mean grade.

Confirm the exact machines, supervised operating time, safety instruction, examination route and certificate before enrolling.
Forklift training
Look for pre-use inspection, load handling, safe manoeuvring, practical control and the correct licence or endorsement process.
Driving
Choose the correct licence class and confirm age, progression, testing and eCitizen charges before paying the school fee.
Ask what the course leads to
A short machine course is not automatically a Level 4 qualification. The institution should name the examination, certificate, licence or endorsement you are working towards.
Which colleges accept D− in Kenya?
A D− student can investigate four main types of training providers.
Use KUCCPS to identify available Artisan or Level 4 programmes and their exact requirements.
Compare the local trade courses, facilities, assessment arrangements and progression routes.
Confirm the trade level, training structure, attachment and assessment schedule.
Check both the institution and the specific programme before paying.
See the machines, workshop, computers, salon stations or kitchen used by current students.
Include assessments, licences, tools, materials, accommodation, transport and attachment.
Do not choose a college simply because its advertisement says “D− accepted.” Search the current TVETA register and ask the institution to show the exact course approval and examining body.
Can you progress from D− to a diploma?
Yes. You do not have to remain at Artisan level. The normal route is to complete each qualification and meet the entry conditions for the next one.
This route takes longer than direct diploma entry, but it builds practical competence at every stage. Ask the college to name the next qualification, its admission rule and the body that awards it.
Keep your training records
Store your certificates, transcripts, assessment records, logbooks and attachment documents safely. You may need them when applying for the next level.
How much do courses for D− students cost?
There is no single national fee for every Artisan, vocational or short course. The complete cost depends on the institution, duration, equipment, assessment and the learner’s living arrangements.
Ask for the payment schedule and identify every compulsory institutional charge.
Separate internal exams, external assessments, licensing and possible retesting.
Include protective clothing, salon kits, ingredients, software, equipment and transport.
Request a written fee breakdown
The lowest advertised tuition can become more expensive once examinations, tools, materials, accommodation and attachment expenses are added.
Students joining eligible public TVET programmes can also check the current HELB, scholarship and bursary arrangements. Funding is subject to the applicable rules and should not be assumed before approval.
Courses for D− students at Newton Institute of Technology
Newton Institute of Technology is a TVET institution in Migori Town. A D− applicant can ask the Admissions Office about Beauty and Wellness, ICT, Plant Operation, Forklift and Driving pathways, among other courses.
The right starting point depends on the kind of work the learner wants to do and the entry, equipment or licensing conditions attached to that course.
Hairdressing, Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology
NIT offers separate Grade III courses in Hairdressing, Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology. Entry is open to applicants with a KCPE certificate or a low KCSE grade, including D− or below.

ICT training
A learner can begin with Computer Packages or another suitable foundation course. From there, the ICT Department can advise on Graphic Design, Digital Marketing, Hardware Repair, Networking, Website Development and deeper technology pathways.
Plant operation, forklift and driving
These programmes have their own age, identification, practical and licensing conditions. Confirm the selected machine or driving class, course duration, current fee, examination route and required documents before registration.
How should you choose the best course?
There is no single course that is best for every D− student. Use four practical questions.
What work do you enjoy?
Machines, computers, construction, food, fashion and beauty require different interests and working conditions.
Can you practise?
Choose a programme with enough tools, equipment, supervision and opportunities to repeat complete tasks.
Is there demand nearby?
Local homes, farms, businesses, workshops and construction activity may reveal more than a national “marketable courses” list.
Your grade decides where you begin—not where you finish
Do not ask only, “Which college will accept my D−?” Ask what you will be able to do confidently at the end, how you will prove it and what the next training level will be.
Mistakes D− students should avoid
A D− normally begins at Level 4. Direct Level 5 entry generally starts at D Plain.
Ask whether it is a national qualification, trade test, licence, industry credential or college completion document.
Investigate the daily work, equipment, complete cost and opportunities where you plan to live.
Visit the workshop, computer lab, salon, kitchen or training site before committing.
Check the institution, programme and examining body through current official sources.
Ask who arranges the placement, provides the logbook and follows up with the host.
Frequently asked questions
Can I join college with a D− in Kenya?
Yes. A KCSE D− qualifies you to apply for Artisan or Level 4 programmes and a range of trade, vocational and short skills courses.
Can I do a certificate course with a D−?
You can directly enter an Artisan Certificate or Level 4 programme. Some institutional and short-course certificates also accept D−. Direct Level 5 entry normally requires D Plain or D+.
Can I study ICT with a D−?
Yes. ICT Level 4 and computer skills courses are available. Your starting point should match your current computer knowledge and career goal.
Can I study nursing with a D−?
A D− does not meet the published direct entry requirement for nursing programmes such as KMTC’s Certificate in Community Health Nursing, which requires at least C− together with specified subject grades.
Is D− accepted for electrical installation?
Yes. D− applicants can join recognised Artisan or Level 4 electrical-installation programmes. Confirm the programme and institution through KUCCPS or TVETA.
Can I move from Artisan to diploma?
Yes. After completing Level 4, you can progress to Level 5 and later Level 6, provided you meet the admission and assessment requirements at each stage.
Which course is most marketable for a D− student?
There is no universal answer. Electrical installation, plumbing, welding, automotive repair, ICT, beauty, food production and plant operation can all lead to work. Choose according to ability, local demand and access to proper practical training.
