Quick answer

Which courses are most marketable for a C− student?

A KCSE mean grade of C− qualifies you for direct entry into many Diploma or TVET Level 6 programmes. The strongest broad choices include ICT, electrical and electronic engineering, automotive engineering, building and civil engineering, agriculture, mechanical and fabrication courses, hospitality, business operations, beauty and fashion, plus selected health programmes whose subject requirements you meet.

Direct entry routeLevel 6C− is the general KUCCPS diploma threshold for many TVET programmes.

A marketable course should prepare you to solve a problem that somebody needs solved—and will pay to have solved well.

The list below is not a salary table. It compares how widely a skill can be used, whether it supports employment or self-employment, how useful it can be in different parts of Kenya and whether the qualification leaves room for progression.

Your starting point

What does C− qualify you for in Kenya?

KUCCPS currently gives C− as the general minimum mean grade for many Diploma or Level 6 TVET programmes. This lets you apply; it does not create automatic admission into every diploma.

Why they lead the list

The top three marketable C− course directions

Rank 01

Information and Communication Technology

ICT ranks first because digital systems are used almost everywhere. A school manages fees and results. A shop tracks stock and sales. A clinic handles appointments and records. Farms, hotels, transport businesses and county offices all depend on computers in one form or another.

The KUCCPS Diploma in Information Communication Technology currently lists C− as its minimum mean grade. The broad title becomes more useful when you build a clear direction in software, networking, cybersecurity, data, repair, databases, design or digital marketing.

Why it ranks highly

The same skill can serve many industries, support local technical work and create selected remote or freelance opportunities.

Proof to ask for

Open a working student project. Inspect a configured network, repaired computer, data report or genuine design portfolio.

Kenya’s Ministry of ICT includes coding, AI, big data, cybersecurity, IoT and mobile applications among its advanced digital skills. Also see the NIT guide to the best ICT courses after KCSE.

Rank 02

Electrical and Electronic Engineering

Electrical training can lead into domestic installation, industrial maintenance, electronics, telecommunications and solar work. New buildings need installations; older homes and businesses need maintenance and fault-finding.

KUCCPS currently gives C− as the minimum mean grade for the Diploma in Electrical Engineering—Power. The workshop should allow repeated practice in measuring, connecting, testing and tracing faults. Theory is necessary, but it cannot replace handling tools and correcting a faulty connection under supervision.

Safety and licensing matter

Ask how the training connects to attachment, supervised work and any regulatory step required before offering services independently.

Rank 03

Automotive Engineering and Vehicle Diagnostics

Vehicles need routine servicing, mechanical repair and increasingly, electronic diagnosis. That creates work in garages, transport businesses, equipment yards and fleet-maintenance departments.

The KUCCPS Diploma in Automotive Engineering currently carries a C− minimum mean grade. A useful course should cover engines, brakes, steering, transmissions and vehicle electrical systems.

A fault code is not a complete diagnosis.

A technician must test the likely cause, complete the repair safely and confirm that the original problem has been resolved.

Ranks 04 to 09

Courses that connect strongly with projects, production and enterprise

04

Building and Civil Engineering

Construction, roads, drainage, drawings, site operations and materials work remain relevant. Inspect surveying equipment and ask how often students work on real sites. The KNBS 2026 Economic Survey reports that construction activity returned to growth after contracting in 2024.

05

Agriculture, Irrigation and Agribusiness

Options include horticulture, irrigation, processing, farm machinery, dairy, poultry, fisheries and aquaculture. A useful course teaches costing, records, water use, handling and marketing alongside production.

06

Mechanical Engineering, Welding and Fabrication

These skills lead towards machine maintenance and visible products such as gates, tanks, frames, roof structures and farm equipment. Judge student work by measurements, joints and finishing.

07

Hospitality, Food Production and Catering

Food production, baking, service, housekeeping and catering can support employment or enterprise. Test a product by costing ingredients, fuel, packaging and delivery before assuming it will make money.

08

Supply Chain, Accountancy and Business

Organisations need purchasing, stock, accounts and sales support. Because these courses are widely offered, spreadsheet ability, accounting software and realistic workplace documents help a graduate stand out.

09

Beauty, Cosmetology and Fashion

These client-based skills can be offered from a salon, barbershop, rented station or mobile setup. Hygiene, speed, consistency and customer care determine whether people return.

Rank 10 · separate admission gates

Can a C− student join a medical course?

Yes, but only selected programmes. Health training is the area where a general “C− courses” list can be most misleading.

C−

Selected health routes

KUCCPS currently lists C− as the mean-grade requirement for the Diploma in Nutrition and Dietetics. Selected technical or certificate programmes may also be available when every subject requirement is met.

C

Nursing entry gate

The Diploma in Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing requires at least C Plain together with the stated subject grades. C− is therefore not enough for direct entry.

Check the current Diploma in Nutrition and Dietetics and Diploma in Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing listings. Never treat an unofficial course name as a professional qualification.

Eight questions that test whether a course is marketable for you

A course becomes useful through the work you can perform, the people who need it and the quality of your training.

  • What exact problem will I be trained to solve?
  • Who pays for this work where I plan to live?
  • Can I see recent work completed by current students?
  • How many hours will I practise under supervision?
  • Does the course include a realistic attachment route?
  • What tools, licences or capital will I need afterwards?
  • Is the institution approved to offer the programme?
  • Can the qualification lead to a related higher level?

A genuine trade-off

Diploma or focused practical course?

C− gives you access to many Level 6 diplomas, but it does not force you to take one. A diploma suits occupations that value deeper technical study, a national qualification and progression. A focused course can be better when you want one defined skill or a faster test of whether the work suits you.

Longer does not automatically mean more marketable. At the same time, a short introduction cannot replace the depth required for complex engineering or regulated health work.
