Quick answer

What can a KCPE holder study in Kenya?

KCPE holders still have recognised vocational routes in 2026/2027. Under the national qualifications pathway, KCPE is a recognised entry route to Level 3, with progression available through Levels 4, 5 and 6. Separately, NITA lists selected Industrial Artisan programmes that accept KCPE directly.[1][2][3]

A KCPE certificate is still usable for vocational progression. The practical question is not whether learning stopped after primary school; it is which recognised skills route fits the work you want to learn next.

KNEC confirms that KCPE was administered for the final time in 2023 as Kenya transitioned from the former 8-4-4 primary examination. Existing KCPE certificates continue to appear in current vocational entry requirements.[4][2]

The qualification ladder

The KCPE vocational progression route

KNQA’s current framework places National Vocational Certificate II / equivalent skills qualifications at Level 3, Artisan qualifications at Level 4, Craft qualifications at Level 5 and National Diploma qualifications at Level 6. For a KCPE holder following the vocational progression route, the practical ladder begins at Level 3 and can continue upward.[1]

Level 3 Courses That Accept KCPE

Level 3 vocational courses that accept KCPE in Kenya across digital, technical, construction, beauty, hospitality and agriculture fields

Five practical directions

Choose by the kind of work you want to learn

Instead of starting with a long list of course names, start with the work itself. The following five pathways group the most useful KCPE-entry options by how the learner actually spends time in training.

Digital & office skills

Computer Applications provides a recognised Level 3 starting point. Build confidence with documents, spreadsheets, presentations, files, email and everyday workplace computer use.

Best for digital beginners

Technical & automotive

Automotive and machinery routes suit learners who prefer tools, components, servicing routines, inspection and workshop practice.

Best for tool-based work

Construction, electrical & energy

Electrical Installation, Plumbing and Solar PV are hands-on routes where measuring, fitting, connecting and testing matter.

Best for practical installation work

Hair, beauty, fashion & hospitality

These fields suit learners who enjoy client-facing service, grooming, food preparation, garments or other work where the finished result can be seen immediately.

Best for service and creative skills

Agriculture & production

Horticulture, poultry and agripreneurship can turn everyday farming exposure into organised production, management and enterprise skills.

Best for farming and enterprise

The distinction that matters

Two KCPE training routes you should understand

Route A

KNQF / TVET progression

  • KCPE provides entry to many Level 3 programmes.
  • Progression can continue through Levels 4, 5 and 6.
  • Useful for a learner building national qualifications stage by stage.
Route B

NITA Industrial Artisan

  • Selected industrial trades accept KCPE directly.
  • Training is built around practical trade competence.
  • NITA Nairobi publishes five-term programmes with centre training and attachment.

These routes are not interchangeable labels. A Level 3 qualification sits in the KNQF progression ladder, while NITA Industrial Artisan programmes follow NITA’s industrial training structure. Use the exact course title, qualification or trade route, and awarding or assessment body to identify what you are joining.[1][3]

Direct KCPE-entry industrial trades

NITA Industrial Artisan programmes

NITA Nairobi lists practical Industrial Artisan programmes for primary- or secondary-school graduates. Current KCPE-entry examples include the following.[3]

Industrial Artisan programmeEntryPublished structure
Carpentry and JoineryKCPE5 terms
Plumbing / Pipe FittingKCPE5 terms
Fitter GeneralKCPE or equivalent5 terms
Welding and FabricationKCPE or equivalent5 terms

Motor Vehicle MechanicsKCPE or equivalent5 terms
Motor Vehicle Electrical and ElectronicsKCPE or equivalent5 terms
Panel Beating and Spray PaintingKCPE or equivalent5 terms
Electrical InstallationKCPE or equivalent5 terms
Electronics MechanicsKCPE or equivalent5 terms

NITA publishes the five-term structure as three terms of centre-based training followed by two terms of attachment.[3]

Long-term progression

Can a KCPE holder eventually reach diploma level?

Yes, through progression. A KCPE holder following the vocational qualification ladder can move from Level 3 to Level 4, then Level 5, and finally Level 6 National Diploma or equivalent. The learner does not enter diploma level immediately; the qualification is built step by step.[1]

A focused starting point

What about short courses?

Short courses are useful when the immediate goal is to learn one focused skill. They are different from KNQF qualifications: the course information should state whether the learner receives an institutional skills certificate, national qualification, trade assessment or another defined award.

For eight-week options, see NIT’s dedicated guide to 2-month courses in Kenya rather than duplicating that full topic here.

NIT publishes the Grade III fee, duration and attachment structure in its Hairdressing Course Fees guide; the separate Grade III → Grade II → Grade I trade-test pathway is documented in NIT’s NITA Grades guide.[5][6]

Important course-title distinction

NIT’s two-month Computer Packages course is an institutional practical skills course. It is separate from the TVET-CDACC Computer Applications Level 3 qualification listed in the national register.

Choose the pathway, not just the name

How to choose the right course after KCPE

01Start with the work

Choose a field whose daily practical work genuinely interests you.

02Identify the route

Level 3, NITA artisan and short-course routes serve different progression needs.

03Check the award

Know the exact course title, qualification or trade route, and awarding or assessment body.

04Inspect the practical training

Tools, software, salons, workshops, kitchens, farms and machinery are where vocational competence is built.

If you want the wider national ladder beyond Level 3, NIT’s TVET courses and requirements guide explains the Levels 4–6 progression separately.
