Courses for D+ in Kenya: Certificate, Technical and Short Courses

What does a D+ qualify you for?
KUCCPS currently gives the following general TVET entry points. This is the starting rule to use before looking at individual course names.
The mean grade is not the only condition
A college may still ask for a particular subject, National ID, minimum age, medical document or licence history. Health, teaching, driving and machine-operation programmes are examples where course-specific rules matter.
Check the exact programme on the KUCCPS portal or with the college. A general D+ entry grade should never be treated as automatic admission to every course carrying the word “certificate”.
Certificate, technical or short course: which route fits you?
These routes can all be useful, but they do not lead to the same qualification.
Certificate · Level 5
Best when you want a full occupational qualification and a recognised path that may continue to Level 6. Confirm the modules, assessment body and progression rules.
Technical or trade training
Best when you learn through tools, installations, machines or repeated service practice. Inspect the workshop and count your supervised practical time.
Focused short course
Best when you need one defined skill in weeks or a few months. Ask what you will be able to perform and what the completion document actually represents.
Do not confuse course length with qualification level
A six-week computer course can be useful, but it is not the same qualification as a Level 5 ICT certificate. A driving course leads into a licensing process; it is not an academic certificate pathway.
Good certificate courses for D+ students in Kenya
The TVETA course register contains Level 5 programmes across ICT, engineering, building, agriculture, business, hospitality and other fields. Start with the kind of work you want to perform.
Information and Communication Technology, software development, networking, cybersecurity, computer repair, graphic design and digital media.
Electrical installation, solar, electronics, automotive technology, motor vehicle mechanics, welding and fabrication.
Plumbing, masonry, carpentry and joinery, road construction, building technology and related practical routes.
Hairdressing, Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology, with shorter specialist options in barbering, nails, makeup, skincare and locks.
Business management, office administration, supply chain, sales, records, store management and bookkeeping.
Food production, catering, baking, tour operations, agriculture, horticulture, animal production, aquaculture and agribusiness.
How to judge each course family
A configured network, repaired computer, working system or genuine design portfolio is stronger evidence than a long software list.
Look at the tools, safety arrangements and tasks students complete themselves rather than watching an instructor demonstrate.
Inspect the salon, kitchen or service area and ask how often learners practise complete tasks from preparation to finishing.
Take extra care with health-related courses
Some programmes have subject requirements or professional rules that are stricter than the general D+ threshold. Confirm the exact qualification with the institution and the relevant regulator before paying.
Short courses you can take with a D+
A focused short course can make sense when the work depends on a specific practical skill. Duration alone does not prove quality.

Courses available at Newton Institute of Technology
Newton Institute of Technology is a private TVET institution in Migori Town. The institute offers training in areas that include ICT, plant operation, driving, hairdressing, Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology, among other courses.
At NIT, a D+ applicant is not pushed into one course simply because of the grade. Admissions first considers the kind of work the learner wants to do, then checks the course requirements, timetable and practical demands.
ICT courses at NIT
Beginners can start with Computer Packages before moving into a broader digital field. Other options include Graphic Design, Digital Marketing, Networking, Database Administration and Computer Hardware Repair and Maintenance.
Learners ready for deeper training can consider Full-Stack Software Development, Cybersecurity, Data Science and Analytics, Artificial Intelligence or Mobile Application Development. These programmes require consistent computer practice and include compulsory industrial attachment.

Hairdressing, Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology
NIT offers separate Grade III certificate courses in Hairdressing, Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology. Each programme takes one year: two terms of institutional training followed by attachment.
Entry is open. A learner may apply with a KCPE certificate, a D+, D, D− or another low KCSE grade. The course choice should be based on the services the learner wants to master, not on which title sounds broadest.
Plant operator training
The Plant Operator Course takes two months and is structured around approximately 70% practical work and 30% theory. Depending on the chosen package and current schedule, training may cover excavators, graders, bulldozers, rollers, shovels and other machines.
Forklift and driving
Forklift training at NIT takes one month and covers inspection, safety, load handling and practical machine control. Driving training takes a minimum of one month. Applicants must meet the applicable identification, age, examination and licensing conditions.

Government payments
Where government charges apply, pay them only through the official eCitizen process. Licence categories may also carry age and progression rules that a D+ result does not override.
How much should you budget?
The advertised tuition fee is only one part of the cost. Ask for a written breakdown before paying a deposit.
Confirm the payment schedule and whether any compulsory institutional charge is separate.
Separate internal exams, external assessments, licensing and possible retesting.
Include protective clothing, salon kits, consumables, software, equipment and transport.
Compare what is included
The lowest advertised figure can become more expensive once examinations, tools, materials, accommodation and attachment expenses are added.
Can you progress from D+ to a diploma?
Usually, yes, but not by treating D+ as direct Level 6 entry. The normal route is to complete the relevant Level 5 certificate and then apply for progression under the rules of the institution and awarding body.
Ask the college to name the next qualification, its entry condition and the body that awards it. A short attendance certificate does not automatically provide progression to a diploma.
How to choose a college that accepts D+
Use the same evidence-based checks whether you are comparing NIT with another institution.
Check the current registration, exact course name, level and assessment or awarding body.
See the machines, computers, salon stations, kitchens or workshop equipment yourself.
Count supervised practical hours rather than accepting a percentage in an advertisement.
Projects and completed tasks reveal whether learners genuinely practise the advertised skills.
Ask who identifies the placement, provides the logbook and follows up with the host.
Include examinations, licences, materials, accommodation, transport, tools and attachment.
Do not choose from the word “marketable” alone
A course becomes useful when the learner can do the work well, show proof and solve a problem that an employer or customer will pay to have solved. Compare the daily work and practical evidence before choosing the title.
Frequently asked questions
Can I join college with a D+ in Kenya?
Yes. D+ is a general entry grade for Certificate or Level 5 TVET programmes. It also qualifies you for Level 4 artisan programmes and many short courses.
Can I do a diploma directly with a D+?
Not through the standard KUCCPS Level 6 entry route, which generally begins at C−. A learner with D+ can start at Level 5 and later follow an approved progression route.
Can a D+ student study ICT?
Yes. ICT, software development, network administration, computer repair, graphic design and other digital pathways are available at certificate or short-course level. Check the exact programme requirements and practical work involved.
Which technical courses accept D+?
Options may include electrical installation, automotive technology, plumbing, welding, building technology, solar installation, ICT and other Level 5 programmes. Plant operation and driving depend more on licensing conditions than on the KCSE grade.
Can I study Hairdressing or Beauty Therapy with a D+?
Yes. At NIT, Hairdressing, Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology have an open entry route. Each Grade III programme takes one year, including two terms and attachment.
Which are the best courses for D+ in Kenya?
There is no honest answer based on the grade alone. Compare the daily work, training facilities, complete cost, assessment route and opportunities available where you plan to work. Then choose the skill you are prepared to practise seriously.
