Who needs refresher driving lessons?
Refresher lessons are for drivers who already hold the appropriate licence but need more practice—after a long break, for parking, road signs, manual control, roundabouts, lane positioning or confidence in traffic. They improve skills you are already licensed to use; they do not add another licence category.
Start with the real need
Who should consider refresher driving lessons?
Refresher training is mainly for someone who already knows how to drive but needs practical help returning to a safe, comfortable standard. There is little value in repeating a complete beginner programme when the real problem is one or two specific skills.

Assessment before packages
What should be checked in the first refresher lesson?
A refresher programme should begin with an assessment rather than putting every driver through exactly the same routine. The instructor needs to see what is already strong and what actually requires practice.
Steering, braking, acceleration, smooth moving off and manual controls where applicable.
Mirrors, blind spots, hazard awareness, lane placement and positioning before turns.
Speed choice, lane selection, gap judgement, signalling and roundabout decisions.
Low-speed control, reversing, road signs, following distance and speed judgement.

Practise with a purpose
Skills worth practising during refresher lessons
Moving off, stopping & hill starts
- Correct jerky starts or frequent stalling before difficult traffic.
- Build smooth clutch, accelerator and parking-brake coordination.
- Practise until the car is controlled rather than rushed.
Observation & lane positioning
- Use mirrors and blind-spot checks consistently.
- Read further ahead instead of watching only the vehicle in front.
- Correct late lane changes, weaving and poor turn positioning.
Junctions & roundabouts
- Approach at a manageable speed.
- Select the correct lane early and judge safe gaps.
- Signal and leave in the correct road position.
Parking & reversing
- Reverse and parallel park without rushing.
- Judge the front and sides of the vehicle.
- Practise confined-space turns if that is your actual weakness.
If you are returning after a long break, begin where vehicle control and observation can settle. Move into more demanding traffic only when the basics are consistent.
Check the licence first
Manual and automatic driving
Refresher lessons cannot override a restriction on your driving licence. Kenya’s current licence schedule states that Category B1 Automatic does not permit a manual-transmission vehicle. See the official licence schedule.
If your licence is restricted to automatic driving and you want to move to a manual vehicle, this is not simply a refresher issue. Section 34(2) of the Traffic Act provides for an existing licence holder to apply for another class or endorsement in the prescribed manner. Traffic Act, Cap. 403.

No one-size-fits-all number
How many refresher lessons do you need?
There is no sensible fixed number for every driver. Someone who only struggles with reverse parking may need much less practice than a driver who has not driven for several years.
Assessment → focused practice → reassessment
After the first session, ask: Which skills still need work before I should drive independently? That gives the training a clear purpose.
Costs depend on the training need
How much do refresher driving lessons cost in Kenya?
There is no single standard tuition fee that describes every refresher programme. The amount can depend on the skills that need attention, lesson length, manual or automatic training, vehicle type, theory revision and the amount of practical road work required.
Parking-only practice is different from a broad return-to-driving programme.
Duration and number of practical sessions affect the total training arrangement.
Manual, automatic and different vehicle types can require different practice.
Road-sign and rule revision may be added when the student needs it.

How NIT sets refresher driving fees
Newton Institute of Technology does not use one fixed refresher-driving fee because refresher students do not all need the same training.
The starting point is the student’s actual need. One driver may want help with parking. Another may need to rebuild confidence in traffic. Someone else may want more practice with road signs, junctions, roundabouts, vehicle control or manual driving.
Training is tailored around the areas that need improvement rather than forcing every student into the same fixed package. This flexible approach allows a student to continue practising at a suitable pace until they are confident, competent and comfortable applying road rules, understanding road signs and driving safely in real road conditions.

Voluntary refresher ≠ automatic retest
Do you need another NTSA test after refresher lessons?
Booking voluntary refresher lessons does not itself trigger a new NTSA driving test. A fresh test applies in separate circumstances provided for under the Traffic Act, while adding another licence class follows the applicable licensing and endorsement process.
Section 39 provides for driving tests and includes knowledge of road rules, recognised road signals and signs, the highway code and fitness to drive the relevant vehicle class. Section 40 separately allows the Authority, following the prescribed police application, to order a fresh test where a licence holder appears so deficient in driving ability as to be a danger to the public. Traffic Act, Cap. 403, sections 39–40.
Theory still matters
Road signs and road-rule revision
If common road signs, markings or right-of-way rules have become unclear, include theory revision in your refresher programme. Section 39 of the Traffic Act specifically includes knowledge of road rules, recognised signals, road signs and the highway code within the statutory driving-test framework. Kenya Law.

What to say before training starts
Be specific. Instead of saying only “I need a refresher,” explain what has changed or where you are struggling.
“I have not driven for two years. I am comfortable with the basic controls, but I need practice with parking, roundabouts and busy traffic.”
- Confirm the vehicle and transmission you will use.
- Make sure your licence permits you to drive that vehicle.
- Identify the areas you want assessed first.
- Ask whether road-sign or theory revision should be included.
- Confirm the lesson arrangement before training begins.
Common questions
Refresher driving lessons FAQ
Can I take refresher lessons if I already have a driving licence?
Yes. Refresher training is specifically useful for licensed drivers who want to improve or restore existing skills. Your licence must still permit the vehicle class you use on the road. Traffic Act section 30 sets out that requirement.
Can I book refresher lessons only for parking?
Yes. If parking is your only serious weakness, focused parking and reversing practice may be more useful than repeating unrelated training.
I have not driven for several years. Do I have to repeat a full course?
Not automatically. Begin with an assessment. The instructor can then determine whether you need broad road practice or only help with selected skills.
Can refresher lessons allow me to drive a manual car if my licence is automatic-only?
No. The current licence rules state that B1 Automatic does not permit manual-transmission driving. Changing the entitlement requires the appropriate licensing or endorsement process.
