The complete route
Eight steps from learner to licensed driver
For most ordinary private-car learners, the starting point is the appropriate Category B class.
NTSA requires a learner following the normal PDL route to train through a licensed driving school.
The PDL is your learner’s licence. It is valid for three months and is not a full driving licence.
Build theory knowledge, vehicle control, observation and safe decision-making before booking the test.
Use the official NTSA service portal through your eCitizen credentials and select an available test appointment.
Show road knowledge and practical driving competence for the class being tested.
After passing and completing the required licensing steps, proceed to the interim driving-licence stage.

Do not book the test just because you can move the car
A learner should reach the point where basic vehicle control does not consume all their attention. You still need enough attention left for mirrors, road signs, pedestrians, motorcycles, junctions and changing traffic conditions.

This is a practical readiness check, not a substitute for the official NTSA test standard.

What does the NTSA driving test cover?
The official assessment is broader than memorising a handful of road signs. NTSA’s published guidance covers road rules, recognised signals and signs, the authorised Road/Highway Code, and fitness to drive the relevant vehicle class.

After the examination
What happens after you pass the NTSA driving test?
Passing the test does not mean the Certificate of Competence itself becomes your driving licence. It confirms that you passed for the relevant vehicle class and allows you to move into the post-test licensing stages.
Your result confirms the required competence for the tested class.
The C of C identifies the class you qualified for and is valid for three months.
Proceed through the interim licensing stage and verify your details carefully.
Complete the card-based licensing stage and follow the official collection instructions.
NTSA states that the Certificate of Competence is valid for three months. If it expires, the licensing officer has discretion over whether another test may be required.

Health requirements
Do you automatically need a medical certificate?
Do not assume that every ordinary first-time learner must obtain a medical certificate before beginning. The licensing framework requires applicants to declare relevant disease or physical disability, and further medical assessment may be required where a condition could affect safe driving. Specialist or professional categories can have additional requirements.

If the test does not go well
What if you fail the driving test?
Return to the weak area and fix it before rebooking. If vehicle control was the problem, practise vehicle control. If observation or road knowledge let you down, work on those areas. A failed attempt is a training signal, not a reason to look for an unofficial licence shortcut.

How long does it take to get a driving licence in Kenya?
There is no single guaranteed number of days. Your total time depends on the driving-school timetable, attendance, how quickly you become competent, availability of NTSA test appointments, whether you pass on the first attempt, and how quickly you complete the post-test licensing stages. Can you get a genuine licence without the official process?
For the normal first-time PDL route, NTSA requires enrolment in a licensed driving school. A driving school trains you; NTSA tests and licenses you. Do not share your eCitizen password or OTP with an unofficial agent, and do not pay someone who claims they can manufacture a genuine NTSA result or licence outside the official system.

Questions first-time learners often ask
Can I drive on my own immediately after passing the NTSA test?
No. Passing gives you the Certificate of Competence; it does not make that certificate itself the driving licence. Complete the required licensing stage and obtain the applicable licence document before treating yourself as fully licensed.
What happens if my Certificate of Competence expires?
NTSA states that it is valid for three months. After expiry, the licensing officer has discretion over whether another driving test will be required or whether the licence application may proceed.
