Beauty Therapy Course Syllabus in Kenya:
Grade III Practical Skills
Learn the sequence · practise the treatment · perform it independently
A practical guide to the Beauty Therapy Grade III skills we develop at Newton Institute of Technology: hygiene, client preparation, skin care, facials, nail care, massage, body care, brows, lashes, makeup, salon practice and Trade Test preparation.
Grade III practical foundation
What is taught in Beauty Therapy Grade III?
Beauty Therapy Grade III builds the foundation for performing beauty services in a clean, organised and professional sequence. At Newton Institute of Technology, students train in workstation preparation, client preparation, product and tool handling, skin care and facials, foundation nail care, massage and body care, brows, lashes, basic makeup, client care and salon practice. Beauty Therapy is listed by TVETA as a Trade Test programme examined by NITA. [1]
A Beauty Therapy syllabus is useful only when the learner can turn the listed topics into a complete client service.
That is why this guide is organised around the work itself: preparing the station, preparing the client, carrying out the treatment, finishing neatly and restoring the workstation. NITA describes trade testing as a systematic evaluation of the competence an artisan or apprentice possesses in a trade. [2]
What the learner actually practises
Beauty Therapy Grade III practical skills
The skills below are taught as connected treatment routines. The learner prepares the station and client first, carries out the procedure, finishes the service and restores the work area.
Hygiene & workstation preparation
Clean the working surface, prepare towels and protective materials, organise products, separate clean and used items, maintain hand hygiene and restore the station after the service.
Clean · organise · restoreClient preparation

Select · use · careSkin care & facials

Inside the practical room
What happens in a Beauty Therapy practical lesson at NIT?
We teach the procedure first, then the learner performs it. Three common lesson patterns show how that works.
Prepare workstation → prepare client → observe skin → arrange products → perform treatment → finish → clean workstation.
Position client → watch the movement → practise → correct pressure and posture → repeat → complete the sequence.
Prepare tools → prepare skin → apply in sequence → blend → check symmetry and finish → clean tools.
Hygiene, tool handling, client positioning, technique, treatment sequence, neatness, time management and completion.
We prepare students to move from preparation to treatment, finishing and workstation reset without depending on continuous prompting from the instructor.
From watching to independent performance
How practical competence develops
Beauty Therapy skills become reliable through repetition. We use a six-stage progression so the learner knows exactly what is expected at each point.
The instructor demonstrates the complete procedure and explains the working order.
The student repeats individual techniques under supervision.
The instructor corrects hygiene, handling, posture, sequence and finishing as the learner works.
The learner repeats the treatment until the movement and sequence become consistent.
The student performs the full service from preparation to workstation reset.
Attachment places the same practical skills into a working beauty environment.
Prepare to perform the work
How we prepare for the NITA Trade Test
TVETA lists Beauty Therapy as a Trade Test programme examined by NITA. [1] NITA explains that Trade Testing evaluates the skills and competence an artisan or apprentice possesses in the relevant trade. [2]
| Area | What the learner demonstrates | Working standard |
|---|---|---|
| Preparation | Workstation, tools, products and client are ready before treatment begins. | Ready before the first treatment step. |

| Procedure | The service is performed in the correct working sequence. | No skipped preparation or finishing stages. |
| Technique | Products, tools, posture and movements are handled correctly. | Controlled, consistent and appropriate to the service. |
| Completion | The treatment is finished neatly and the work area is restored. | Client and workstation are both properly completed. |

Keep the two naming systems separate
Beauty Therapy Grade III is not the same label as Beauty Therapy Level 3
NITA currently lists Beauty Therapy curricula at Levels 2, 3, 4 and 5. [3] Separately, NITA’s Textile Training Institute continues to publish the traditional Grade III → Grade II → Grade I Beauty Therapy route. [4]
