The published overall pass requirement is above 70%. In simple terms, the final practical examination is a short window in which you have to show that the competence developed during training is actually there.

This distinction is worth understanding before you prepare. The regulations tell us how the Category G examination is structured and the competence expected from an operator. They do not provide one public script saying that every excavator candidate must dig the same trench or every grader candidate must complete the same pass.

Do not confuse the two practical provisions
The 160 hours and the 30-minute test are not the same thing
The Category G curriculum separately provides for 160 hours of practical plant operation under supervision in an actual work setting such as a construction site, factory or farm. A supervisor completes assessment records during that period.

The longer practical period is where your operating habits should be built. By the time you reach the final examination, those habits should no longer depend on constant instructor reminders.
From instruction to movement
What should you expect when the test begins?
The most useful assumption is that the examiner wants to see whether you can handle a normal machine task without being coached through it. Listen to the whole instruction before moving. Make sure you understand what has been requested, where the task is supposed to happen and where the machine is expected to finish.
If you genuinely missed part of the instruction, ask for it to be repeated. There is nothing wrong with clarifying the task. What should already be familiar by this stage are the machine controls themselves.

Use the controls deliberately rather than trying to look fast or dramatic.
Your attention must stay wider than the bucket, blade, drum or forks.
Pressure changes behaviour
Being watched can change the way you operate
A learner can be smooth during an ordinary practical lesson and suddenly become hurried once the lesson begins to feel like an assessment. The machine has not changed. The pressure has.
This is why rushing is such a poor way to demonstrate confidence. A fast movement is only useful when it is also controlled and appropriate for the task. If your normal training routine involves positioning carefully and using small corrections, keep doing that during the examination.
Newton Institute of Technology structures plant operator training at approximately 70% practical and 30% theory. Its training method follows a simple sequence: explain, demonstrate, practise and correct. By the later stages of training, the important change is that the learner should need fewer reminders. If the instructor still has to remind you where to look, when to slow down or which control to use every few moments, another supervised practice session will probably help more than trying to memorise test-day advice.
Make the task easier before it starts
Positioning often decides how easy the task becomes
Some candidates struggle with the working attachment when the real problem began earlier. The machine was simply in the wrong place.
An excavator set up awkwardly may need unnecessary swing movement. A wheel shovel that approaches material badly can make the loading cycle much harder. A grader that starts away from the intended line may force the learner into constant blade and steering corrections.
Before beginning the main task, look at your setup. Can the machine do the job cleanly from where it is? If not, reposition. A controlled correction before the task is usually better than fighting a poor setup all the way through it.
What the examiner can actually see
What does good practical performance look like?
You do not need an invented point-by-point marking sheet to prepare intelligently. A competent performance normally becomes visible through a few simple things.
You understand what you have been asked to do. Your use of the controls is deliberate rather than hesitant or aggressive. You keep track of the machine’s position and the people or obstacles around it. You can carry out the task without somebody beside you narrating every step. And when something is not quite right, you recognise it early enough to correct it calmly.
The Category G curriculum itself centres on machine control, positioning, operation, relevant work tasks, lifting where applicable, safe shutdown and operator-level daily service.

Keep seeing the whole machine
Keep your attention wider than the attachment
It is very easy to stare at the bucket, blade or forks when you are concentrating. Meanwhile, the rest of the machine is still moving.
On an excavator, the rear and swing area matter. On a loader or forklift, what is behind you becomes important when reversing. On a roller, you need to remain conscious of the edge of the working area and the space available for the next turn.
Good observation is not one check before you start. It continues for as long as the machine is moving. If something changes and you are no longer certain that the next movement is safe, stop long enough to establish what is happening.
Prepare for the machine you trained on
How preparation differs from one machine to another
The examiner is assessing the Category G equipment for which you have trained, so preparation has to make sense for that machine. The examples below are not an official NTSA test sheet. They are areas a learner should be comfortable with before presenting for assessment.
Excavator
Coordination matters more than simply knowing what each lever does. Boom, arm, bucket and swing inputs should begin to work together naturally. Keep the rear and swing area in your awareness, not only the digging point.
Motor grader
The grader tends to expose over-correction. Final practice is less about dramatic blade movement and more about holding a working line, making smaller adjustments and keeping the machine settled.
Motor roller
The challenge is often consistency: straight travel, controlled reversing and predictable turns rather than unnecessary steering corrections. Know your working edge and the space for the next pass.
Bulldozer
The quality of the approach affects the whole pass. A cleaner approach gives you much more control once the blade starts working and reduces the need to correct direction and blade position at the same time.
Wheel shovel
Loading begins before the bucket enters the material. Look at your approach angle, machine position and the route you will use when reversing away.
Backhoe loader
Be comfortable with the machine’s different operating arrangements, the relevant loader or rear digging controls, positioning and stabiliser use where required.
Forklift
A forklift task does not finish when the load leaves the ground. Approach, fork position, load stability, travel, turning and final placement all belong to the same movement.
Know it without repeating another guide
What about the pre-start inspection?
You need to understand it, but this article does not need to teach the entire inspection procedure again. Pre-operation checks are part of competent plant operation, and Category G training includes daily or pre-shift inspection and safe preparation of the equipment.

Control the response, not just the machine
One mistake does not have to ruin the whole test
You may need to make a small positioning correction. Your first approach might be slightly off. The machine might not finish exactly where you expected on the first movement.
That does not mean the rest of the assessment has to collapse. Look at where the machine actually is, regain control and make the correction you need. Trying to disguise a small mistake with a fast movement often produces a larger one.
Stay calm and recover control
- Recognise the actual position of the machine.
- Make the smallest sensible correction.
- Continue only when you understand the next movement.
- Let the examiner make the official judgement.
Sometimes the correct decision is to wait
- The instruction is genuinely unclear.
- Visibility has become poor.
- Someone enters the operating area.
- The machine responds in an unexpected way.
Use the last few sessions intelligently
How to use the final week before the test
Do not try to relearn the entire course. Find the thing that still causes trouble. A useful question for your instructor is: “What do you still have to correct me on most often?”
If the answer is reversing, spend more time reversing. If your grader work becomes rough when you have to make several corrections, work there. If your wheel-shovel approach is inconsistent, stop practising only the part you already enjoy and fix the approach. The final week should make your weaknesses smaller.
Practise complete tasks rather than isolated controls. Notice where you hesitate once the instructor stops talking.
Let the final practice feel more like an assessment: receive the task, operate and finish with fewer prompts.
Review what your own instructor taught you, confirm reporting instructions and rest.

A simple test of readiness
You are probably approaching test readiness when a basic task no longer requires continuous instruction. You know where the important controls are. You can move, stop and reverse without the machine feeling unpredictable. You can put it in the right place before starting the work and remain aware of what is happening around you.
Small corrections do not cause panic. Most importantly, you understand the job you are doing rather than merely remembering a sequence of lever movements.
Keep your own method on test morning
On the morning of the examination
Follow the reporting instructions you have been given. Carry the required documents and practical equipment. Listen to the briefing and then concentrate on your own assessment.
Plant-operator test centres tend to produce plenty of last-minute stories. Somebody will say the test is easy. Somebody else will tell you nearly everyone fails. Another person may explain exactly what the examiner supposedly asks every candidate to do.
None of them is operating the machine for you. Stick with your training.
Be careful about copying the candidate ahead of you
What you see another learner doing may not apply to your test. The instruction could be different. The machine might be positioned differently. The candidate may also be making a mistake.
Watching is fine. Rebuilding your entire operating method five minutes before the test is not. Take your own instruction and work from the habits you developed during training.
Know which rule applies
What do the published rules say about retesting?
The general examination provisions state that a learner who fails a driving test is referred back for retraining and that no retest is done within 21 days of the failed test.
They also distinguish between theory and practical failure. A learner who fails the theory component retakes the entire driving test. A learner who fails the practical component may retake only the practical component if that retest is done within six months of the failed driving test.

Booking procedures and administrative requirements can change, so before arranging a retest or making payment, confirm the current process through your training institution and the official NTSA/eCitizen channel.

After a successful examination
The Category G examination is intended to lead to a Certificate of Competence, enabling the relevant professional category to be endorsed on the driving licence.

An NTSA test is different from an employer machine assessment
After qualification, you may face another practical assessment when applying for work. An employer may want to see whether the experience on your CV matches what you can actually do with the machine.

You do not need a new operating style because it is test day. Listen carefully. Get the machine into a sensible position. Do the work at a pace you can control. If you need a small correction, make it without turning it into a crisis.
