Before the engine
1. Safety and worksite awareness
A new learner can easily concentrate so hard on the machine that the rest of the worksite disappears. Training has to correct that early.
See the whole work area
Check people, vehicles, obstacles, excavations, edges and anything the machine could reach.
Know the blind spots
Mirrors help, but they do not remove every area the operator cannot see directly.
Use site communication
Signals, agreed routes and ground-person communication matter when machinery and people work together.
Stop when unsure
If visibility, a signal or the condition of the ground is unclear, stopping is safer than improvising.
Before moving, know where you are, what movement you are about to make and who or what could be affected by it.

2. Understanding the machine, controls and instruments
Before a student can work confidently, the cab has to stop feeling like a collection of unfamiliar pedals, gauges and levers. The operator needs enough machine knowledge to control it deliberately and notice when normal behaviour changes.

3. Pre-start and pre-shift inspection
The Category G curriculum specifically requires a daily or pre-shift inspection. In practical training, that means learning to inspect the machine deliberately rather than treating the walk-around as paperwork.
Check the machine before climbing in
- Look for leaks, damaged hoses and loose or damaged parts.
- Check tyres or tracks, attachments, pins, steps and handholds.
- Look beneath and around the machine for anything unusual.
- Carry out the operator checks required for that machine.
Prepare the operating position
- Adjust the seat and mirrors before movement.
- Confirm the main controls and parking system.
- Observe gauges and warning indicators after startup.
- Do not treat a successful engine start as proof that everything is ready.
A learner who can perform a machine task but routinely skips the inspection is still missing part of the operator’s job.

4. Starting, moving, positioning and handling terrain
Early practical sessions may look simple: start, move, stop, reverse, turn and park. Those exercises develop the control needed before the learner attempts a full work task.

Use the correct procedure, observe instruments and bring the machine to a controlled stop.
Steer & reverse
Learn the machine’s width, turning behaviour, visibility and response to control inputs.
Position
Place the machine where it can perform the task efficiently before relying on the attachment to correct poor setup.

5. Machine-specific practical skills
The common foundation stays the same, but the actual work changes according to the machine selected for training.
Digging and coordinated control
Position the machine, coordinate boom, arm and bucket, control swing, excavate and place material safely.
Blade position and surface control
Work with blade angle and height, move material, shape the surface and maintain a controlled working line.
Controlled compaction
Use straight passes, suitable overlaps, safe turns and consistent movement while watching edges and ground conditions.
Load handling and stability
Approach, lift, lower, travel, stack and unstack while protecting load stability and people nearby.

6. Attachments, auxiliary equipment and lifting
The Category G syllabus includes ancillary equipment and lifting operations where applicable. These tasks change how the operator thinks about balance, visibility, working radius and communication.
Attachments: understand what changes
Changing working equipment can affect balance, visibility, hydraulic behaviour and operating limits. Use the attachment only for the task and procedure it is designed for.
Lifting: control the load and communication
Position safely, understand agreed signals and keep people clear. If a signal is unclear, stop and confirm before continuing.
The shift ends properly
7. Daily servicing, fault awareness and safe shutdown
Plant operator training is not plant-mechanic training. The operator still needs enough machine awareness to notice when something changes.
Notice changes
Watch for unusual noise, vibration, warning indications, leaks or changes in hydraulic, steering or braking response.
Do operator checks
Carry out the daily checks and basic care expected for the particular machine and manufacturer’s instructions.
Park safely
Choose an appropriate location and leave the working equipment in the required safe position.
Report clearly
Explain what changed, where it happened and what the machine was doing when the problem appeared.

Common beginner mistakes to watch for during training
Watching only the attachment
The operator still needs to track people, obstacles, machine position and the area around the task.
Moving too aggressively
Smooth inputs usually produce more predictable machine movement than sudden corrections.
Trying to fix poor setup with controls
Sometimes the better solution is to reposition the whole machine before performing the task.
Skipping inspection after confidence grows
The walk-around has to remain routine even when operating starts to feel familiar.
From training ground to work setting
8. The official 160-hour supervised practical component
Workplace practice introduces real instructions, other machines, workers, changing surfaces, site communication and tasks that must be completed to a standard.
The 160 hours belongs to the official Category G curriculum framework. NIT’s advertised plant operator programme is a two-month course. They describe different parts of the training route.

Knowledge + demonstration
9. Theory, legal knowledge and assessment
The official framework covers machine introduction, basic control, legal aspects, practical operation and examination. A strong programme therefore needs both understanding and demonstration.
Theory: know why the procedure exists
Safety, machine knowledge and legal responsibilities give context to practical rules. The learner should recognise risk rather than memorise commands blindly.
Practical: show a repeatable method
Prepare, observe, position, control the machine, complete the task and finish safely. Assessment should reflect competence, not one memorised manoeuvre.
Same foundation, different task
Does every plant operator student learn the same syllabus?
Not entirely. Safety, inspection, control, worksite awareness, daily operator care and shutdown form the common foundation. Machine-specific work changes after that.

Blade control, shaping and maintaining a working line.
Forklift
Load handling, stability, stacking and safe travel.

A multi-machine course therefore has to balance breadth with enough operating time to develop real control.
A short qualification clarification
Category G training and NITA plant operator qualifications are not the same thing
Category G
- Sits within Kenya’s driving-licence framework for industrial, construction and agricultural plant and equipment.
- Its curriculum covers control, legal responsibilities, supervised practical operation and examination.
Occupational curricula
- NITA currently lists Earth Moving Plant Operator and Lifting Plant Operator curricula at Levels 2, 3 and 4.
- These should not be presented as if they are identical to the Category G licensing route.
