Can you upgrade directly to Class C or CE?
No—not from an ordinary Class B2 licence. Kenya’s heavy commercial route is progressive: hold B2 for at least two years before C1, hold C1 for at least two years before C, then build at least four years of Category C experience before CE. You must also meet the minimum age for the class and pass the relevant NTSA test.
A heavy commercial licence is earned in stages. The next class depends on what is already recorded on your licence—not only on the truck you want to drive.
That distinction matters. Category C covers heavy rigid vehicles, while CE adds the heavy trailer or semi-trailer combination used by articulated trucks. Before paying for training, check both the vehicle category and your eligibility date.
Choose the correct category
What is the difference between C1, C and CE?
The categories are based on the vehicle’s gross vehicle weight and whether it pulls a light or heavy trailer. The vehicle you intend to operate should match the category shown on your driving licence.

The mandatory progression
NTSA age and driving-experience requirements
Count experience from the date the required lower category was endorsed on your licence. Holding a different class for many years does not replace the stated lower-category experience.
- B2 foundation
Drive a light vehicle and build the two years needed before applying for C1.
- C1 · age 22+
Requires at least two years holding Category B2.
- C · age 24+
Requires at least two years holding Category C1.
- CE · age 28+
Requires at least four years of Category C driving experience.
- CD · age 30+
For hazardous materials transit; requires at least two years under CE.
When can you move from C1 to C?
When you are at least 24 and have held C1 for at least two years. Both conditions must be satisfied.
When can you move from C to CE?
When you are at least 28 and have accumulated at least four years of verified Category C experience.
A simple eligibility-date example
If Category C was endorsed on 15 September 2022, the four-year mark arrives on 15 September 2026. The driver may then seek CE training if they are also at least 28 and meet the other application conditions.

What do you need to upgrade a heavy commercial licence?
Start with the statutory licence conditions. School-admission documents and an employer’s recruitment checks are related, but they are not the same thing.
Your driving record must show the category required for the upgrade.
The lower category must have been held for the full prescribed period.
You must meet the age threshold for C1, C or CE when applying.
Your NTSA services, test booking and endorsement are handled through the official account.

How to upgrade to Class C or CE in Kenya
The exact screen labels can change, but the practical order remains straightforward.

Confirm the classes held, endorsement dates, age and experience before paying.
- Enrol for training
Choose an NTSA-licensed driving school that offers the required category.
- Apply for the PDL
Use your eCitizen/NTSA account and select the correct additional category.
- Train and practise
Complete the theory and practical preparation for the correct vehicle combination.
- Test and endorse
Pass the NTSA test, pay the additional-class endorsement charge and confirm the new class.
Passing a test is not the final check. Confirm that C or CE appears correctly on your digital driving record before accepting work that depends on it.

Heavy commercial driver training in Migori
Class C and CE training at Newton Institute of Technology
NIT offers both Class C and Class CE driving courses. Training combines vehicle control, road safety, defensive driving, basic daily checks and preparation for the relevant NTSA assessment.
Plan around the timetable
How long does the complete upgrade process take?
NIT’s standard driving course runs for at least one month. The complete process may take longer if a learner attends part-time, misses scheduled lessons, needs additional practice, waits for an NTSA test date or has to retake the test.
A learner who attends consistently and practises as scheduled is easier to prepare than one who repeatedly interrupts training. Ask Admissions for the current timetable before choosing a start date.

Heavy commercial drivers support domestic freight, regional transit, construction, agriculture and industrial distribution. The licence opens the legal vehicle category; the job still depends on safe driving, verified experience and the employer’s requirements.

A complementary skill—not a substitute
Should a truck driver also train as a plant operator?
For construction and equipment-logistics work, the combination can be useful. A driver may transport machinery while a plant-operator qualification supports work with equipment at the destination.
Commercial driving category
C and CE authorise the relevant truck or truck-and-trailer combination. They do not authorise operation of plant machinery.
Plant-operator category
Category G is a separate route. At NIT, a learner needs a Class B driving licence before endorsing the selected Category G machines for training.
Choose the extra skill for a clear work reason. It should not delay the experience needed for your next commercial-driving category.

The right check at the beginning can prevent an ineligible application, the wrong course or an incomplete budget.
- Applying for CE before completing four years under Category C.
- Counting years held under B2 as if they were Category C experience.

- Budgeting for tuition but forgetting PDL, test and endorsement charges.
