What should motor grader training actually teach?
A motor grader course should move beyond steering and basic controls. The learner needs to understand pre-start inspection, machine positioning, moldboard control, cutting, carrying and spreading material, windrow control, camber, cross-fall, shoulder shaping, drainage and finish grading.

Start with the road
Before you touch the blade, learn to read the road
A trainee can memorise every control in the cab and still struggle if basic road geometry makes no sense. A gravel road can look smooth and still be wrong if water remains in the wheel tracks, the shoulder traps runoff or the cross-fall has disappeared.
The grader is not merely smoothing the surface. It is helping create or restore a deliberate road profile.
“One of the first things a new grader trainee learns is that moving the machine is the easy part. The real skill is controlling the blade while reading the road. Beginners often concentrate so much on the controls that they forget to look at the surface they are leaving behind. During training, we keep bringing the learner back to three questions: Where is the material going? What road profile are you trying to create? And where will the water go when it rains? Once a trainee starts thinking that way, grader operation begins to make much more sense.”
Give water a way off the road
The centre is commonly shaped higher than the sides so surface water can move away from the travelled area.
Control the slope across the surface
The required transverse slope comes from the road design, survey information or site instruction—not guesswork.
Do not build a small dam at the edge
A badly shaped shoulder can trap water beside an otherwise well-graded carriageway.
Know where the material goes next
A controlled ridge of material can be useful for the next pass; an uncontrolled one creates more work.

Good grading is not just about smoothness. The road profile has to move water away from the travelled surface and into the intended drainage path.

Understand the machine
The grader is more than one blade
The moldboard gets most of the attention, but the operator is coordinating several machine and blade movements at once. Good training builds those movements gradually instead of throwing a beginner into complicated combinations.
Moldboard
The main grading blade cuts, carries, rolls and spreads material. Its lower cutting edge is where the work meets the ground.

Angle affects how material travels along the moldboard and where it leaves the blade during a pass.
Material movementBlade height
Height controls the depth of cut. Too much can create another problem; too little may leave the high area untouched.

Blade behaviourArticulation
The frame can bend at its articulation joint, giving the operator more positioning flexibility during manoeuvring and grading.

On machines equipped for it, front-wheel lean can assist steering and help the grader resist side forces in particular operations.
Steering supportChange one control, watch what happens to the material and surface, then understand why. The useful relationship is control input → material behaviour → finished result.
Plan every pass
A grading pass should solve a specific problem
A pass is one deliberate journey through a section of work. The first may cut or gather material. Another may carry it in a windrow. A later pass can spread it closer to the required position. As the surface gets closer to the target profile, corrections normally become smaller.
- Understand
Know whether the task is shaping, spreading, correcting levels, shoulder work or finish grading.
- Inspect
Check the road section, hazards, people, traffic and the grader before starting.
- Position
Set the grader and blade up so the first pass starts with a clear purpose.
- Cut / carry
Move material in a controlled way and manage the developing windrow.
- Look behind
The surface left behind tells you whether the pass achieved what you intended.
- Diagnose
Identify ridges, hollows, poor drainage, uneven spreading or excessive material movement.
- Correct
Make the next adjustment smaller and deliberate rather than repeating the previous pass blindly.
- Finish
Leave a more accurate surface with the required road profile and drainage intent.
Cut → carry → spread
- Cut only as much as the next movement can manage.
- Carry material along the moldboard instead of letting it pile randomly.
- Spread where the profile needs material, not where it is easiest to dump it.
Know the next pass before you leave the first
- A controlled windrow gives you usable material for the next movement.
- An oversized ridge can interfere with traffic, other machines or your own next pass.
- Keep asking where the material is now and where it needs to go next.

Move the job towards the required shape
- Deal with larger high spots and bulk material.
- Establish the broad formation and material position.
- Expect more substantial corrections while the surface is still far from final.
Refine a surface that is already close
- Use smaller, controlled corrections.
- Protect areas that are already satisfactory.
- Keep speed low enough for stable machine and blade control.
A grader can be travelling slowly and still be doing demanding work. Speed is useful only when the operator can maintain the required line, level and finish.
Learn from the surface
A good trainee learns to diagnose a bad pass
The useful progression is from “that does not look right” to “this is the defect, this is the likely cause, and this is what I will change on the next pass.”

Excess material left in a narrow line can point to poor blade position or uncontrolled discharge.

A hollow can result from removing too much material or failing to replace enough where the level is low.

Machine bounce, speed, inconsistent blade movement or existing road irregularity can produce repeated unevenness.

Material condition changes how the blade behaves
Loose, compacted, coarse, fine, damp, dry or sticky material will not all respond to one memorised grader setting. A trainee needs to observe whether material is cutting cleanly, rolling along the moldboard, piling, escaping or pushing the machine sideways.
Read the material and the road before making another input.
Change blade depth, angle, position or travel approach for a clear reason.
Look behind the grader and compare the result with the intended profile.
Build repeatable judgement instead of copying one fixed control position.
Training that produces skill
What should motor grader practical training look like?
Driving around a yard is not enough. A useful exercise has an objective the learner and instructor can observe: form a controlled windrow, move material from a high area, reshape a short road section, preserve drainage, work towards a marked level or explain why the last pass needs correction.

By the end of training, the learner should be able to explain what changed on the road after a control input, recognise a poor pass and make a more deliberate correction—not merely say how many days were spent around the machine.

Professional routine
Pre-start inspection is part of operating the grader
Walk around and prepare
- Check tyres, wheels, moldboard and cutting edge.
- Look for visible hydraulic leaks, damaged hoses or loose parts.
- Check articulation area, lights, mirrors, steps, handholds and warning devices as taught.
- Look at the ground below the parked machine for signs of a new leak.
Monitor, park and report
- Keep attention on people, traffic, other machines and changing ground.
- Respect drains, embankments, culverts and uncertain edges.
- Park and shut down using the taught procedure.
- Report defects instead of hiding them or handing them silently to the next operator.
Work as part of the site team
The survey team and grader operator have to speak the same language
On controlled road construction, visual judgement is not enough. Alignment, levels, slopes, offsets and formation limits may be established by the survey or project team through pegs, marks, measurements or machine guidance.
The grader operator does not invent the required cross-fall. The operator works towards the specified profile and stops to confirm when an instruction or reference point is unclear.
Do not destroy a survey reference simply because it sits near the work. When you are not sure what the level or marker means, stop and ask before making an expensive correction.
Keep the pathways separate
G5 Category G training and TVET Level 4 grader training are not the same description
This guide focuses on the motor grader within the Category G plant-operator pathway followed by NIT. Kenya also has a separately listed TVET qualification route for Heavy and Light Machinery Operations (Grader), Level 4.
Driving and machine-operator framework
- The published Category G curriculum requires a valid licence in another category.
- Minimum enrolment age is 20 years.
- Medical certification is required.

Newton Institute of Technology’s Plant Operator programme takes two months. Motor grader learners train within the selected machine package, subject to the machines confirmed for the intake.
The stronger measure is what the learner can do by the end: complete the taught pre-start routine, position the grader, explain what the blade is doing to the material, manage a simple windrow, understand camber and cross-fall, recognise a poor pass and correct it more deliberately.
