How to Choose a Good ICT College After KCSE in Kenya

Compare registration, trainers, practical learning, student projects, costs and attachment support before paying fees.

The computer lab may look impressive during an admissions visit. That is not enough.

Before you pay fees, ask a trainer to show you what students built in the previous term. Open one of the projects. Try it. Ask who wrote the code, how often students use the lab and what happens when a learner gets stuck.

Those few questions will tell you more than a glossy brochure.

Choosing an ICT college after KCSE is really a choice about the kind of work you want to be able to do. A good college will not merely teach you the names of programming languages, networks or databases. It will give you time to practise, people who can guide you through mistakes, and evidence of what learners can produce.

This guide gives KCSE graduates and parents a practical way to compare ICT colleges in Kenya. It also explains how training works at Newton Institute of Technology (NIT) in Migori, so that you can assess our claims using the same questions.

Start with the course, not the college name

“ICT” covers very different kinds of work. A student who enjoys building websites needs a different programme from one who wants to analyse data or secure networks.

Before comparing colleges, write down what you would like to learn to do. It can be as simple as:

  • create mobile applications;
  • analyse and present data;
  • understand and protect computer networks;
  • develop AI-based applications; or
  • begin with computer packages before moving to a specialised field.

You do not need to have your whole career planned after KCSE. You do need a course with a specific outcome. Be cautious when a prospectus uses broad labels but cannot tell you which tools you will use, what you will build or how your work will be assessed.

Ask for the curriculum. Then ask a trainer—not only an admissions officer—to explain it.

Verify the institution and the programme

Do this before discussing discounts or paying a deposit.

The Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA) maintains Kenya’s register of accredited TVET institutions. Search for the institution on the official TVETA website and confirm the programmes it is authorised to offer. Also ask who examines or certifies the course and what document you will receive after completing it.

A serious admissions office will answer the following questions in writing:

  • What is the institution’s registration status?
  • What is the exact name and level of the course?
  • Who examines, certifies or awards the qualification?
  • What are the entry requirements?
  • How long is classroom training, and is attachment additional?
  • Are examination, registration or project charges separate from tuition?

Do not treat a social-media page, branded T-shirt or busy reception as proof of accreditation. Use the regulator’s register and keep official receipts for every payment.

Ask what you will be able to do by the end

Technology changes, but vague promises remain vague.

Instead of asking whether a college teaches “modern ICT”, ask for details. A software-development student should be able to name the applications they will build. A data student should know which datasets, spreadsheets, databases and visualisation tools they will use. A cybersecurity student should expect networking, operating systems, documentation and lab procedures—not only the phrase “ethical hacking”.

Useful questions include:

  • Which technologies are taught in each month or module?
  • How often is the curriculum reviewed?
  • Which tools are core, and which are only introduced?
  • How many assessed projects will I complete?
  • Will I work individually as well as in a team?
  • Can I see a recent student project and its documentation?

Do not choose a course because it lists the largest number of fashionable tools. A shorter, coherent stack taught through complete projects is more useful than twenty technologies rushed through in demonstrations.

Find out how practical training works on an ordinary week

Every college says its courses are practical. Ask what that statement means on a Tuesday afternoon.

How many hours will you spend using a computer? Will you write and test your own work, or watch the trainer do it? Can you use the lab outside lesson time? What happens when the internet is down? How many learners share a machine?

Good practical training includes the unglamorous parts of technology: finding errors, rewriting weak work, testing with users, keeping versions, documenting decisions and presenting a finished solution. That is where learners become independent.

When visiting a college, check:

  • whether the computers can run the required software;
  • internet reliability and power backup;
  • access to networking or specialist equipment where the course needs it;
  • the number of students in a practical class;
  • whether learners can save and back up their work safely; and
  • whether technical help is available outside the formal lesson.

At NIT, ICT learners can use the laboratories in the evenings and on weekends, with access extending up to 10:00 p.m. This matters because three classroom hours are rarely enough for a learner who is debugging a program or preparing a project presentation.

Look at completed work, not sample screenshots

Student projects are one of the best ways to judge a college. Ask to see something that works. A credible project should have a clear purpose, users, data, testing and an explanation of what the students contributed.

NIT learners have worked on projects connected to real organisational needs, including:

  • a hospital staff clocking and attendance system; and
  • an ERP system for water-production and distribution businesses.

The website project, for example, has required learners to deal with authentication, database communication, responsive interfaces and coordination between front-end and back-end work. The value is not that a project has an impressive name. It is that students meet the kinds of problems developers face when a system must work for real users.

Ask who owns a student project, whether you may include your contribution in a portfolio, and whether the college teaches learners how to demonstrate their work without exposing private data or passwords.

Meet the people who will train you

A trainer’s job is not to provide code that students copy line by line. The trainer must be able to explain why a solution works, notice where a learner is confused and guide that learner towards solving the next problem independently.

Speak to at least one trainer before enrolling. Ask about:

  • relevant qualifications and professional certifications;
  • recent experience with the tools in the curriculum;
  • systems or projects they have built or supervised;
  • class size and access to individual support;
  • how practical work is marked; and
  • how struggling beginners are supported.

Pay attention to the answer you receive when you ask a basic question. A strong trainer will not embarrass you for being new. Clear explanations are part of technical competence.

Engineer Wilfred Mwendia, Principal and Technical Reviewer at NIT, puts it plainly: “Programming is not about memorising code. Learners progress faster when they learn to break a problem into steps, test each step and correct mistakes systematically.”

Confirm that you will leave with a portfolio

A certificate records that you completed a programme. A portfolio helps an employer or client see what you can do.

Depending on the course, useful portfolio evidence may include a deployed website, mobile app, database design, data-analysis notebook, dashboard, network diagram, security assessment, GitHub repository or technical report. The work should include your own contribution and an explanation that you can defend in an interview.

Ask the college whether portfolio preparation is built into the timetable. Projects completed only in the final week tend to be thin. A stronger programme produces smaller pieces of work throughout the course, then brings them together in a capstone project.

Check industrial attachment arrangements carefully

“We offer attachment” can mean several things. Find out exactly what the college does.

Ask whether the institution identifies host organisations, prepares application letters, monitors learners, assesses the placement and helps when a host cancels. Ask recent students how long placement took and whether the work matched their course.

At NIT, the main specialised ICT programmes include a compulsory three-month industrial attachment after institutional training. The classroom periods are:

This distinction matters. A “six-month course” and a pathway of six months in class plus three months on attachment are not the same commitment.

Compare the complete cost—not only tuition

The cheapest advertised fee is not necessarily the lowest total cost. Before making a decision, request a written fee structure and check for:

  • registration and examination charges;
  • software, internet or laboratory fees;
  • project and printing expenses;
  • certification charges;
  • attachment-related costs; and
  • refund, deferment and transfer rules.

Also consider the equipment you may need. For NIT’s specialised ICT courses, learners should plan for a laptop with at least an Intel Core i5 or equivalent processor, 8 GB RAM where the course requires it, and a 256 GB SSD. Have the ICT department check a laptop before buying it; the course tools matter more than the brand name on the lid.

Value is the relationship between cost and what you actually receive: trainer time, lab access, current teaching, projects, attachment support and a portfolio you can use.

Speak to current students without the admissions officer beside you

Students will tell you what the timetable does not.

Ask whether classes begin on time, whether practical sessions happen as scheduled, how quickly trainers respond to questions and whether the lab is genuinely available. Ask graduates whether attachment support worked as promised and what they wish they had known before joining.

One negative comment does not prove a college is poor, just as one testimonial does not prove it is excellent. Look for patterns and compare what students say with what you observe.

Check the support available after class and after graduation

Technical skill alone does not secure work. Learners also need to explain projects, write a sensible CV, communicate with clients, price small jobs and behave professionally during attachment.

Ask whether career preparation covers:

  • CV and portfolio review;
  • interview and project-presentation practice;
  • attachment applications;
  • freelancing and client communication;
  • software pricing and maintenance arrangements; and
  • pathways to further study or professional certification.

Be cautious with promises of guaranteed jobs or effortless remote income. A credible college will explain the support it provides without pretending that every graduate has the same outcome.

A campus-visit checklist you can use

Take these questions with you and write down the answers:

  1. Can I verify the institution and this course on the relevant official register?
  2. Who examines, certifies or awards the qualification?
  3. May I see the current curriculum and weekly timetable?
  4. What will I build before I graduate?
  5. Can you open a recent student project and explain the students’ role?
  6. How many learners share a computer during practical lessons?
  7. When may students use the lab outside class?
  8. Can I speak to the trainer who teaches the main technical modules?
  9. How is attachment arranged, monitored and assessed?
  10. What charges are not included in the advertised fee?
  11. What laptop specification does the course require?
  12. Can I speak privately with a current student or recent graduate?

If the answers are evasive, keep looking.

Why KCSE graduates consider NIT for ICT training

Do I need my own laptop?

How can I tell whether a course is genuinely practical?

Ask to see the weekly timetable, assessment plan and recent student work. Then ask a student how many hours they used the lab last week. Specific evidence is more reliable than the word “practical” in an advert.
