Quick answer

How do you become a web developer in Kenya?

Learn the browser first, then learn how the browser talks to the rest of the application. Start with HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Add Git, APIs and a front-end framework. Then build server logic, connect a database, add authentication, test complete workflows and deploy the finished application. MDN’s current curriculum follows the same foundation-first progression. [2]

The whole journey before the detail

Think in three phases, not a long list of disconnected technologies

Web development becomes easier to understand when each tool has a job. The first phase builds the interface. The second connects the interface to application logic and data. The third makes the system dependable, deployable and presentable.

1 Phase one

Build the browser

Foundation

Learn the three technologies every web interface depends on, then use them together before adding frameworks.

Core skills
  • HTML
  • CSS
  • Responsive design
  • JavaScript

2 Phase two

Connect the system

Full stack

Track the project, move data through APIs and connect the front end to server logic and persistent data.

  • Git
  • APIs
  • React
  • Back end
  • Database
  • Authentication

3 Phase three

Ship and prove it

Production

Make the application usable, secure, testable and live, then show clear evidence of what you personally built.

  • Security
  • Testing
  • Accessibility
  • Deployment
  • Portfolio

Phase 1 · Build the browser

Start with HTML, CSS and JavaScript—in that order

HTML gives the page structure and meaning, CSS controls presentation and responsive layout, and JavaScript adds programming and interaction. MDN treats these as core web-development foundations. [3] [4]

<>

HTML · Structure

Learn headings, links, images, forms, tables, navigation and semantic page sections. Build a complete small website from your own structure.

Checkpoint · structured multi-page site
CSS

CSS · Responsive layout

Learn the box model, Flexbox, Grid, spacing, positioning and media queries. Make the same site work comfortably on phones and desktops.

Checkpoint · responsive interface
JS

JavaScript · Behaviour

Learn functions, arrays, objects, events, DOM work, JSON, promises and async/await. Build features that react to real user actions.

Checkpoint · interactive browser app

Do not rush to a framework. Move forward when you can structure a page, make it responsive and program a useful feature without copying an entire finished solution.

Phase 2 · Connect the application

Add Git, APIs, a framework, server logic and a database

Once the browser foundation is comfortable, the next goal is connection: track changes, move data, process requests and store records.

Git

Track the work and connect the front end

  • Use Git and GitHub from an early stage.
  • Write meaningful commits instead of uploading only final files.
  • Learn GET, POST, PATCH and DELETE through a real API.
  • After JavaScript fundamentals, learn a framework such as React.

MDN includes version control in the modern web-development workflow and places frameworks after the core web languages. [5] [6]

DB

Build the server and persistent data layer

  • Process requests through routes and application logic.
  • Validate input and return clear success or error responses.
  • Learn tables, keys, relationships, queries and joins.
  • Add user accounts, protected routes and role-based permissions.

Use one application with real records so server code and database design are solving an actual problem rather than existing as separate exercises.

01
BrowserInterface + validation

Collect input, validate it and prepare the request clearly.

02
ApplicationAPI + server logic

Process the request, apply business rules and return the right response.

03
DataDatabase + response

Store or retrieve the record, then send the result back to the interface.

The milestone that changes everything

Trace one feature from the screen to the database

Take a student-registration feature. A user completes the form, JavaScript validates it, the API sends it, the server applies the rules, the database stores the record and the response updates the interface.

When you can follow that chain, find the broken layer and correct it, you are thinking beyond webpages and into application development.

End-to-end thinking Browser → API → Server → Database → Response build · trace · debug · explain Use the competency test

Phase 3 · Make the application dependable

Security, accessibility, testing and deployment belong in the build

Production skills are not an extra layer you add at the very end. They affect how you design forms, permissions, data handling, errors and complete user workflows. OWASP’s Top 10:2025 covers major web-application risks, while W3C provides practical accessibility guidance for developers. [8] [9]

Before you call a project finished

Production-readiness check

Kenya’s Office of the Data Protection Commissioner oversees the country’s personal-data protection framework, so applications handling student, employee, patient or customer data should control access deliberately. [10]

  • Responsive layout works on phone and desktop.
  • Forms handle valid and invalid input clearly.
  • Protected features enforce the correct user role.
  • Passwords and sensitive routes are handled securely.
  • Errors can be traced using browser and server evidence.
  • Important workflows have been tested.
  • The application is deployed and another person can open it.

Portfolio proof

Three strong projects can show the whole progression

GitHub recommends highlighting a small number of strong, clearly documented projects. Build fewer projects, but make each one easier to inspect and explain. [7]

01
FoundationResponsive website

Show semantic HTML, CSS, responsive layouts and accessibility.

02
ProgrammingInteractive front-end app

Show JavaScript logic, forms, events, API use, error handling and Git history.

03
Full stackComplete application

Show server logic, a database, authentication, testing and deployment.

Good full-stack ideas: school-management system, inventory application, booking system, appointment platform or another system with real data and different user roles.

NIT Web Developer Competency Test

Can you demonstrate the complete development process?

This is a stronger readiness measure than counting how many technologies you have studied.

  • Build a structured page from scratch.
  • Make the interface work on mobile and desktop.
  • Add useful JavaScript application logic.
  • Show a clear Git development history.
  • Send and receive structured API data.
  • Process requests on the server.
  • Create, retrieve and update related database records.
  • Restrict a protected feature by user role.
  • Trace a deliberately introduced error.
  • Test valid and invalid workflows.
  • Deploy the finished application online.
  • Explain one feature from the browser to the database.

Practical planning

Computer requirements, learning time and Kenya’s digital-skills context

PC

What computer do you need?

A normal session may run a browser, developer tools, code editor, terminal, development server, database, Git and API-testing tools. NIT’s working baseline for major ICT programmes is an Intel Core i5 or comparable AMD Ryzen system with at least a 256 GB SSD.

KE

How should you think about time?

Measure readiness by what you can complete independently rather than only by months studied. Kenya’s Labour Market Information System provides official labour-market intelligence, while the Ministry’s 2026 digital-outsourcing initiative focuses on market-driven digital skills and access to digital work opportunities. Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

What should a beginner learn first for web development?

Start with HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Learn structure first, responsive styling second and browser programming third. Add Git, APIs and frameworks after the foundations make sense.

Should I learn React before JavaScript?

No. Learn JavaScript fundamentals first. React becomes much easier when functions, arrays, objects, events, modules and asynchronous JavaScript are already familiar. [6]

Do I need a degree to become a web developer?

A degree can be useful and some employers may require one, but practical routes also exist. Whichever route you choose, build evidence through working projects, source code, testing and practical experience.

How long does it take to become a web developer in Kenya?

There is no single fixed timeline. Readiness depends on how consistently you practise, whether you can build projects independently and how much feedback and practical experience you get. As one structured example, NIT’s Full-Stack Software Development pathway includes 8 months of institutional training followed by a compulsory industrial attachment of at least 3 months. [1]

How many projects should a beginner portfolio contain?

Start with a small selection of strong projects. Three projects that show progression—from responsive website to full-stack application—are enough to begin presenting clear evidence of ability. GitHub also recommends highlighting a small number of strong projects. [7]

How long is NIT’s Full-Stack Software Development pathway?

The current route consists of 8 months of institutional training followed by a compulsory industrial attachment of at least 3 months. Current published tuition is KSh 90,000. [1]

The rule worth remembering

Learn one layer, connect it, test it, then add the next

Structure the page. Make it responsive. Program the browser. Move data through an API. Process the request on the server. Store the record. Test the workflow. Deploy the result. Then explain how it all connects.
