The articulated-truck upgrade
Can an experienced truck driver complete Class CE training in one month?
Yes. NIT schedules its Class CE teaching programme across four practical weeks. The course moves an eligible Category C driver into coupling, reversing, road positioning, air-brake checks, trailer awareness and NTSA assessment preparation. The test date and final endorsement can fall after the teaching month.
A driver can be completely comfortable in a rigid truck and still be caught out by a trailer on the first reverse. Correct too sharply and the trailer folds faster than expected. Turn without allowing for off-tracking and the trailer cuts across the space the driver thought was clear.
That adjustment is where Class CE training begins. Newton Institute of Technology runs this upgrade in Migori for experienced Category C drivers. It is not a beginner driving course: applicants must meet the age, licence and experience rules before enrolling.
Know the licence upgrade
What does a Class CE licence allow you to drive?
Category CE covers a heavy truck above 7,500 kg gross vehicle weight when it is coupled to a heavy trailer or semi-trailer. It is the category used for articulated truck-and-trailer combinations.
Category C: heavy rigid truck

Check the endorsement date first
Who can join the Class CE driving course?
Start with the date when Category C was added to your licence. Four years of general driving experience is not enough if Category C was endorsed more recently.
Be at least 28 years old and within the applicable maximum age of 65.
Your current driving licence must already show the heavy rigid-truck category.
Have at least four documented years of Category C driving experience.
Complete the required training and take the theory and practical CE retest.
Answer yes to all three before you pay
You will also need valid identification and access to your eCitizen account for the relevant NTSA services.

Four weeks behind the wheel
The one-month Class CE practical training roadmap
The programme is progressive. Early sessions establish whether the combination is safe to move; later work adds reversing, public-road decisions, load awareness and assessment preparation. An instructor may repeat an exercise when a learner needs more time to control it safely.
Vehicle, coupling and air brakes
Inspect the prime mover and trailer; check the fifth wheel, kingpin and lock; connect air and electrical lines; operate the landing gear; build pressure and verify brake response.
Reversing and yard control
Practise straight-line reversing, offset backing and a marked loading-space approach. Learn mirror routines, blind-spot control, pull-up decisions and safe communication with a guide.
Road work and transmission control
Work on smooth moving-off, the gearbox fitted to the rig, range changes where applicable, early gear selection, wide turns, off-tracking, rear swing and following distance.
Load safety and NTSA preparation
Cover centre-of-gravity risk, load restraint, axle-load awareness, weighbridge responsibility, defensive driving, mock checks and practical assessment preparation.
The exact gearbox and connection hardware depend on the current training vehicle. Weighbridge instruction covers procedure and driver responsibility; it does not mean every learner will drive through a public weighbridge during the course.
School tuition + government charges
How much does the Class CE course cost at NIT?
NIT’s one-month practical and theory tuition is KSh 49,500. Government charges are paid separately through the official eCitizen process.
KSh 51,750 combines the stated school tuition with three published statutory charges; it is not a promise that every possible cost is covered. A learner who needs a retest or additional practical sessions should budget separately.
Separate training from licensing
Does the Class CE course really take one month?
The NIT teaching programme is scheduled for four weeks. A learner who follows the timetable and reaches the required standard can complete the planned lessons within that period.

Regional haulage
Operating on longer commercial corridors where route planning, rest and defensive driving matter.
Construction logistics
Supporting project supply chains and deliveries where access, ground conditions and site rules vary.
Agriculture and industry
Carrying inputs, machinery or products across agricultural and industrial distribution networks.
Employers may also consider the driver’s safety record, route experience, cargo knowledge, references and vehicle-care habits. Hazardous-goods work requires the separate category and requirements applicable to it.

Class CE driving course in Kenya: FAQs
Can I join Class CE directly from Category B?
No. Category CE requires at least four years of Category C experience. The legal commercial-truck progression must be completed in order.
Is Class CE the same as trailer driving?
In everyday Kenyan usage, “trailer driving course” usually refers to Class CE training. The legal category covers a heavy truck coupled to a heavy trailer or semi-trailer, including an articulated combination.
Is the NIT Class CE fee KSh 49,500?
Yes. The current NIT tuition for the one-month practical and theory course is KSh 49,500. NTSA charges are separate.
How much should I budget for the first attempt?
Using the currently published NTSA charges, the estimated total is KSh 51,750: KSh 49,500 tuition plus KSh 2,250 for the PDL, test booking and additional-class endorsement. Check the live eCitizen amounts before payment.
Will I receive the CE endorsement after exactly four weeks?
Not automatically. Four weeks is the teaching timetable. The learner must also be test-ready, attend the confirmed NTSA assessment, pass and complete the endorsement process.
What vehicle will I train on?
The category requires a heavy truck with a heavy trailer or semi-trailer. Ask Admissions to confirm the current NIT training combination and timetable when registering.
Does NIT provide a vehicle for the NTSA practical test?
NIT coordinates the appropriate test vehicle under its current assessment arrangements. Confirm the booking details with Admissions because the test date and administrative steps are handled separately from the teaching timetable.
Does passing Class CE qualify me to carry hazardous goods?
No. Hazardous-goods driving belongs to a separate category with additional age, experience, training and retesting requirements.
