What should a Class A learner budget for?
At Newton Institute of Technology, motorcycle training costs KSh 5,000. For a first-time learner, the current NIT fee guide lists KSh 650 for the PDL, KSh 1,050 for the NTSA test and KSh 750 for the interim licence, giving an estimated KSh 7,450 through the interim-licence stage. Which motorcycle category should you train for?
You do not need to reproduce the whole Kenyan licence table here. You do need to tell the school how you intend to use the motorcycle so the correct training route is confirmed before your learner documents are processed.
Private light motorcycle
For an adult riding an ordinary two-wheeled motorcycle above 50cc. The published minimum age is 18.
Motorcycle taxi / courier
The professional motorcycle-taxi and courier route. If your goal is boda boda or delivery work, say so at registration.
Three-wheeled motorcycle
The dedicated three-wheeler category in the current published licence schedule.
Many schools use that phrase commercially. The published schedule still distinguishes A1 light motorcycles from A2 motorcycle taxi/courier use. Confirm the category that matches your intended use.

Entry check
Requirements for Class A motorcycle training
For A1, the learner must meet the published minimum age of 18. Motorcycle-taxi training has additional requirements, so a learner planning commercial passenger or courier work should identify that purpose at enrolment.
Correct category
Tell the school whether the motorcycle will be used privately, as a taxi/courier, or as a three-wheeler.
Learner process
Register through a licensed driving school and follow the applicable PDL and eCitizen/NTSA process.
Commercial route
Motorcycle-taxi training has additional requirements. Confirm them before the application is processed.

Build control first
What Class A motorcycle training prepares you to do
Motorcycle training combines road knowledge with practical control. The important progression is from understanding the motorcycle, to controlling it in a practice area, to making safe decisions around other road users.
Before moving
Helmet use, riding position, controls, brakes, lights, indicators, tyres and basic pre-ride checks.
Motorcycle control
Moving off, low-speed balance, throttle and gear control, turning, stopping, parking and emergency braking.
Road riding
Observation, speed choice, road position, junctions, roundabouts, overtaking, following distance and safe stopping.
Before the test, starting, stopping, turning and braking should no longer require the instructor to correct every basic movement.
NTSA preparation
What should you prepare for in the motorcycle test?
Prepare for both road knowledge and practical motorcycle control. The theory side includes road signs, markings, traffic rules and Highway Code principles. The practical side is where safe starting, balance, braking, observation, turning, positioning, stopping and parking have to come together.
Theory
Know what road signs and markings require you to do, not only their names.
Practical
Show controlled riding, observation and safe decisions rather than memorised test-day tricks.
Ready?
You should be able to repeat the basic riding skills calmly and consistently.

You are closer to test readiness when you can start smoothly, balance at low speed, turn accurately, brake progressively, stop in an emergency, observe before changing direction and maintain sensible road position without continuous prompting.
