Quick answer

How much does a student need in Nairobi each month?

In 2026, the cost of studying in Nairobi for a student living away from family is not tuition alone. Prepare approximately KSh 20,000 to KSh 55,000 per month for living expenses. Over six months, accommodation, food, transport, internet, learning materials and personal expenses can add approximately KSh 120,000 to KSh 330,000 to the course fee.

How to read these figures: they are working budgets, not fixed Nairobi prices. A student living with relatives or walking to class may spend less. A private room, long commute or daily bought meals can push the cost higher.

Three realistic spending patterns

The figure on the admission letter is incomplete

Tuition is not the total course cost

Suppose a six-month course charges KSh 60,000. If the student then spends KSh 33,900 each month, pays KSh 20,000 to move and set up a room, and keeps KSh 10,000 for travel and emergencies, the commitment is no longer KSh 60,000.

Tuition+Living+Setup+Travel=Complete cost

This is an illustration, not a fee quotation. Its purpose is to show why two courses with similar tuition can have very different final costs.

Usually the largest monthly expense

How much is student accommodation in Nairobi?

The room price cannot be judged on its own. Check how many people share it, what the fee includes and how much it will cost to reach class.

Shared accommodation

KSh 6,000–20,000 monthly

The price changes with the number of occupants, location, security and included services.

Confirm meals, internet, water and deposit.

Bedsitter or private room

KSh 8,000–25,000+ monthly

Privacy costs more once water, electricity, cooking, furniture and transport are added.

Inspect the room and keep every receipt.

Subsidised accommodation

Often cheaper, rarely guaranteed

Spaces can be limited or competitively allocated. Do not rely on one until it is confirmed.

Get the allocation in writing.

Daily expenses that repeat all term

Food and transport costs

Food: KSh 8,000–15,000 monthly

This working range suits a student whose accommodation does not include meals. Cooking and carrying lunch usually cost less than buying every meal.

  • Check whether cooking is allowed
  • Include cooking fuel and drinking water
  • Budget for all seven days, not class days only

Transport: calculate 22 class days

A return fare that looks small becomes a serious monthly expense when multiplied by every class day.

Costs families often discover after admission

Rent deposit

Often requested together with the first month’s rent.

Bedding and utensils

A furnished room may contain little more than a bed.

Electricity and water

Confirm whether these bills sit inside or outside the rent.

Uniform and safety wear

Some practical courses require clothing or protective equipment.

Printing and internet

Assignments, online research and applications consume data and paper.

Tools or a laptop

The programme may require equipment that tuition does not provide.

Attachment expenses

Transport, meals and accommodation may remain the student’s responsibility.

Travelling home

Several return journeys can add a substantial amount to the budget.

Learning materials and course extras

Admission and tuition may not cover registration, examinations, printing, practical materials, protective clothing, tools, a laptop, attachment transport or certification charges.

Request the complete fee structure. It should show what is included, what is optional and what must be paid separately. A low tuition figure is not helpful when essential costs appear after the student has reported.

Choose the value, not the city name

Is studying in Nairobi worth the extra cost?

Sometimes it is. The reason should be strong enough to justify the additional bill.

Moving may make sense when…
  • the required course is not available closer to home;
  • the facilities provide a clear, verified advantage;
  • the student can live affordably with relatives;
  • a scholarship or employer covers the major costs; or
  • the location creates a genuine practical or attachment advantage.
Studying near home may win when…
  • a suitable, properly accredited course is available;
  • the student can avoid rent and room deposits;
  • practical facilities and instructor access are adequate;
  • the saving protects the student from dropping out; or
  • the money can buy tools, a laptop or support attachment.
What extra value will the student receive for the extra money?

Calculate before you commit

Use the complete study-cost formula

Tuition+Institutional charges+Monthly living × months+Setup and travel=Complete study cost
  1. 1
    What is the complete tuition fee?

    Ask which registration, examination and certification charges are separate.

  2. 2
    Where will the student live?

    Confirm the rent, deposit, included services and distance to class.

  3. 3
    What must the student buy?

    List the laptop, tools, uniform, protective clothing and practical materials.

  4. 4
    Who meets attachment costs?

    Transport, meals and temporary accommodation may fall outside tuition.

  5. 5
    Can the family sustain the whole course?

    A workable completion budget matters more than an affordable first payment.

A practical western Kenya option

Studying in Migori may remove the relocation bill

Newton Institute of Technology is located in Migori Town. The institute offers training in areas that include ICT, plant operation, driving, hairdressing, Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology, among other courses.

Selected ICT programmes also have online, evening or weekend learning arrangements, depending on the course. Applicants should confirm the current course, facilities, fees, timetable, assessment and attachment arrangement before enrolling.

Quick answers for students and parents

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to live in Nairobi as a student?

An off-campus student should budget approximately KSh 20,000 to KSh 55,000 per month, excluding tuition. Accommodation, food and transport create most of the difference.

What is the cost of studying in Nairobi for six months?

Six months of living expenses may cost approximately KSh 120,000 to KSh 330,000. Add tuition, examinations, deposits, equipment, setup and travel home.

How much is student accommodation in Nairobi?

Shared accommodation may cost approximately KSh 6,000 to KSh 20,000 per month. A bedsitter or private room may cost around KSh 8,000 to KSh 25,000 or more.

Is shared accommodation cheaper than a bedsitter?

It often is, especially when meals, internet, water and security are included. Compare the complete monthly bill rather than rent alone.

Can studying near home save money?

Yes. Living with family can remove rent, deposits and part of the food bill. The saving can be substantial over a course lasting six months or longer.

Does studying outside Nairobi reduce employment opportunities?

Not automatically. Employers consider practical ability, relevant qualifications, experience, discipline and whether the applicant can perform the work.

Final advice

Calculate the whole course—not the first payment

For many off-campus students, Nairobi living costs can reach KSh 20,000 to KSh 55,000 every month. Nairobi may still be worthwhile when it provides a clear advantage. If suitable training is available closer to home, the saving can protect the family budget and make course completion easier.

Information checked

Cost movements were checked against the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics consumer-price publication for July 2026.

The accommodation and living-cost estimates were prepared after reviewing publicly available Nairobi prices in August 2026. Individual providers are not named in accordance with NIT’s editorial policy.
