A trainee plant operator may know the names of the controls but still need considerable supervised practice before operating safely and smoothly. A beauty student can describe a procedure correctly and still need repeated hands-on work before serving a client confidently. A technician may identify every component in a diagram and then encounter a fault that does not follow the neat examples from class.

Real work has awkward edges. Customers interrupt. Machines behave differently. A colleague misunderstands an instruction. A file becomes corrupted. A measurement is wrong. Something that worked yesterday refuses to work today.

Practice is where knowledge begins to turn into judgement.

Engineer Simon Barongo

“Two people can bring me the same certificate. A machine may produce a warning you have never seen before. A client may want something that sounds simple until you begin.

Work experience exposes a learner to those imperfect situations.

This helps explain the renewed attention to workplace-based learning in Kenya.
