Section 55 requires plant and machinery to:<\/p>\n      <ul>\n        <li>be used for the work for which they were designed; and<\/li>\n        <li>be operated by a competent person.<\/li>\n      <\/ul>\n      <p>The Act&#8217;s definition of a competent person takes into account adequate training, relevant qualifications and experience.<\/p>\n      <div class=\"nit-pg-highlight\">\n        <strong>What that means for the operator<\/strong>\n        <p>Know the machine. Understand the job. Do not improvise unsafe uses.<\/p>\n      <\/div>\n      <p>Workers also have responsibilities. They are expected to take reasonable care, use protective equipment provided, follow authorised safety instructions and report hazards they cannot safely correct.<\/p>\n      <p>Worksite safety is therefore shared\u2014but the decisions made from the operator&#8217;s seat still matter greatly.<\/p>\n    <\/section>\n\n    <section class=\"nit-pg-section nit-pg-section--comparison\">\n      <p class=\"nit-pg-eyebrow\">Worksite responsibility<\/p>\n      <h2>A licence does not make every worksite safe<\/h2>\n      <p>Holding the relevant licence or endorsement is important. What are you doing, where are you moving, who is nearby and has anything changed?<\/p><\/li>\n        <li class=\"nit-licence-step\"><strong>WALK<\/strong><p>Walk around the machine and immediate work area. Look underneath, behind, beside and at the ground.<\/p><\/li>\n        <li class=\"nit-licence-step\"><strong>CHECK<\/strong><p>Look for anything that could affect safe operation: tyres or tracks, brakes, steering, leaks, hoses, attachments, mirrors, warning devices and safety equipment.<\/p><\/li>\n        <li class=\"nit-licence-step\"><strong>LOOK<\/strong><p>Look beyond the machine.
