They begin by reading the handover, checking the machine and walking the work area.<\/p>\n  <p><a href=\"https:\/\/new.kenyalaw.org\/akn\/ke\/act\/2007\/15\/eng@2022-12-31\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kenya&#8217;s Occupational Safety and Health Act<\/a> requires safe plant and systems of work, information, instruction, training and supervision. It also requires employees to use protective equipment, follow safety procedures and report dangerous situations. The legal duties belong to both the workplace and the worker; a checklist helps organise those duties but does not replace them.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n\n<section class=\"nit-pg-section nit-pg-section--comparison\" id=\"before-moving\" aria-labelledby=\"before-moving-heading\">\n  <p class=\"nit-pg-eyebrow\">Pause before the key turns<\/p>\n  <h2 id=\"before-moving-heading\">Five questions before any machine moves<\/h2>\n  <p>Ask these questions at the beginning of a task and again whenever conditions change.<\/p>\n  <div class=\"nit-deg-rule-grid\" aria-label=\"Five questions before moving a machine\">\n    <article class=\"nit-deg-rule\"><span>01<\/span><h3>Am I authorised, fit and familiar?<\/h3><p>Do not operate because a key was handed to you. Confirm that you are authorised for the task, have received machine familiarisation and are fit for work. Fatigue, alcohol, drugs, illness, poor visibility and distraction change risk quickly.<\/p><\/article>\n    <article class=\"nit-deg-rule\"><span>02<\/span><h3>Is the machine safe to inspect and start?<\/h3><p>Read the handover and defect log. Walk around the equipment before entering the cab. A fresh pool of oil, a damaged hose, a loose wheel component or a missing guard is easier to see from the ground.<\/p><\/article>\n    <article class=\"nit-deg-rule\"><span>03<\/span><h3>Is the work area controlled?<\/h3><p>Look for people, traffic, soft ground, edges, excavations, slopes, overhead lines, underground services and restricted space. Decide where the machine may travel, turn, swing, load, tip and park.<\/p><\/article>\n    <article class=\"nit-deg-rule\"><span>04<\/span><h3>How will we communicate?<\/h3><p>Agree on signals, radio use and the person directing the manoeuvre. If the operator loses sight of the designated spotter or does not understand a signal, the safe response is to stop.<\/p><\/article>\n  <\/div>\n  <div class=\"nit-cm-gates\">\n    <article class=\"nit-cm-gate\"><div class=\"nit-cm-gate__grade\">05<\/div><div><h3>Where is the escape from trouble?<\/h3><p>Know how to stop the machine, lower the attachment safely, isolate it and report an emergency. Keep access routes clear. Do not wait for an alarm or collision to begin thinking about the emergency procedure.<\/p><\/div><\/article>\n    <article class=\"nit-cm-gate\"><div class=\"nit-cm-gate__grade\">!<\/div><div><h3>When a task becomes unsafe<\/h3><p>Stop controlled movement, place the attachment in the safest position the circumstances allow and follow the site&#8217;s emergency procedure. Warn people who may be exposed, contact the designated supervisor or emergency lead and keep others away from the machine. Do not restart, move a casualty or attempt a repair unless the emergency plan and an authorised person require it.<\/p><\/div><\/article>\n  <\/div>\n  <div class=\"nit-pg-highlight\"><strong>Revise the site emergency arrangement<\/strong><p>Emergency arrangements differ by site and machine. Revise the alarm, assembly point, isolation method and reporting contacts with your instructor before practical work begins.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n<section class=\"nit-pg-section\" id=\"pre-start-checklist\" aria-labelledby=\"pre-start-heading\">\n  <p class=\"nit-pg-eyebrow\">Daily study and handover aid<\/p>\n  <h2 id=\"pre-start-heading\">Daily plant operator pre-start checklist<\/h2>\n  <p>Use this plant operator safety checklist as a study and handover aid. The exact inspection varies by machine and manufacturer. Record the machine identification, hour reading, date, location, operator, defect, corrective action and sign-off on the site&#8217;s approved form.<\/p>\n  <div class=\"nit-deg-band-grid\">\n    <section class=\"nit-deg-band\" aria-labelledby=\"documents-heading\">\n      <div class=\"nit-deg-band__head\"><span>Checklist A<\/span><h3 id=\"documents-heading\">Documents and handover<\/h3><\/div>\n      <ul>\n        <li>I am authorised and familiarised for this machine and task.<\/li>\n        <li>I reviewed the previous shift&#8217;s handover and unresolved defects.<\/li>\n        <li>The required inspection, service or examination status is current.<\/li>\n        <li>I know the planned task, route, work limits and emergency procedure.<\/li>\n        <li>A competent person has confirmed any machine-specific requirement I do not understand.<\/li>\n      <\/ul>\n    <\/section>\n    <section class=\"nit-deg-band\" aria-labelledby=\"work-area-heading\">\n      <div class=\"nit-deg-band__head\"><span>Checklist B<\/span><h3 id=\"work-area-heading\">Work area<\/h3><\/div>\n      <ul>\n        <li>Pedestrians and mobile plant have controlled, clearly understood routes.<\/li>\n        <li>Swing, crush, reversing and loading zones can be kept clear.<\/li>\n        <li>Ground condition, slope, edge distance and bearing capacity suit the task.<\/li>\n        <li>Overhead and underground services have been identified and controlled.<\/li>\n        <li>Lighting, dust, rain and visibility allow the task to proceed safely.<\/li>\n        <li>The operator and designated spotter have agreed on signals or radio communication.<\/li>\n      <\/ul>\n    <\/section>\n    <section class=\"nit-deg-band\" aria-labelledby=\"walkaround-heading\">\n      <div class=\"nit-deg-band__head\"><span>Checklist C<\/span><h3 id=\"walkaround-heading\">Walk-around with the engine off<\/h3><\/div>\n      <ul>\n        <li>The ground beneath the machine shows no unexplained fresh leak.<\/li>\n        <li>Tyres, wheels, tracks and undercarriage show no obvious unsafe damage.<\/li>\n        <li>Attachments, pins, locking devices and visible retaining parts appear secure.<\/li>\n        <li>Hoses, cylinders, pipes and connections show no visible damage or active leak.<\/li>\n        <li>Steps, handholds, access platforms and the cab are clean and secure.<\/li>\n        <li>Guards, covers, mirrors, cameras and windows are present and usable.<\/li>\n        <li>Lights, reflectors, warning labels and registration or identification markings are visible.<\/li>\n        <li>The fire extinguisher and other specified emergency equipment are present and serviceable.<\/li>\n        <li>Fluid levels are checked only by the approved method and under safe conditions.<\/li>\n      <\/ul>\n    <\/section>\n    <section class=\"nit-deg-band\" aria-labelledby=\"cab-heading\">\n      <div class=\"nit-deg-band__head\"><span>Checklist D<\/span><h3 id=\"cab-heading\">Cab and stationary function checks<\/h3><\/div>\n      <ul>\n        <li>The seat, seat belt or operator restraint and mirrors are adjusted.<\/li>\n        <li>Controls are in the required safe position before starting.<\/li>\n        <li>Gauges and warning indicators complete their normal start-up check.<\/li>\n        <li>Horn, lights, beacon, reversing alarm and other warning devices work.<\/li>\n        <li>Steering, service brake and parking brake respond correctly.<\/li>\n        <li>Controls and attachments are tested slowly in a clear area.<\/li>\n        <li>No unusual noise, smell, vibration, smoke or warning remains unexplained.<\/li>\n      <\/ul>\n    <\/section>\n  <\/div>\n  <div class=\"nit-cm-gates\">\n    <article class=\"nit-cm-gate\"><div class=\"nit-cm-gate__grade\">H<\/div><div><h3>Hydraulic leak warning<\/h3><p>Never use a hand to search for a pressurised hydraulic leak. Fluid can penetrate skin. Keep clear, shut the machine down and report the suspected defect.<\/p><\/div><\/article>\n    <article class=\"nit-cm-gate\"><div class=\"nit-cm-gate__grade\">S<\/div><div><h3>Safety device failure<\/h3><p>If a required safety device does not work, do not improvise around it. Park or keep the machine isolated as instructed, label or report the defect through the site&#8217;s system and wait for an authorised decision.<\/p><\/div><\/article>\n  <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n<section class=\"nit-pg-section nit-pg-section--comparison\" id=\"ppe-access\" aria-labelledby=\"ppe-access-heading\">\n  <p class=\"nit-pg-eyebrow\">Protection begins before the cab<\/p>\n  <h2 id=\"ppe-access-heading\">PPE and safe access notes<\/h2>\n  <div class=\"nit-cm-gates\">\n    <article class=\"nit-cm-gate\"><div class=\"nit-cm-gate__grade\">PPE<\/div><div><h3>Use the protection required for the site<\/h3><p>The site risk assessment decides the protective equipment required. Common items include a helmet, safety boots, high-visibility clothing, gloves, eye protection and hearing protection. Respiratory protection may be required where dust or fumes are not controlled by other measures.<\/p><\/div><\/article>\n    <article class=\"nit-cm-gate\"><div class=\"nit-cm-gate__grade\">3<\/div><div><h3>Use three points of contact<\/h3><p>Use the handholds and steps provided. Face the machine and maintain three points of contact while climbing. Keep footwear free of mud and oil. Do not jump from the cab or use controls, steering wheels, hoses or levers as handholds.<\/p><\/div><\/article>\n  <\/div>\n  <div class=\"nit-pg-highlight\"><strong>PPE is the last line of defence<\/strong><p>A reflective vest does not make it safe to stand in a blind spot, and a helmet does not make it safe to walk beneath a suspended load.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n<section class=\"nit-pg-section\" id=\"blind-spots\" aria-labelledby=\"blind-spots-heading\">\n  <p class=\"nit-pg-eyebrow\">Keep people outside the danger zone<\/p>\n  <h2 id=\"blind-spots-heading\">Blind spots, swing zones and exclusion areas<\/h2>\n  <p>Large machines can hide a person, vehicle or object from the operator even when mirrors and cameras are fitted. Excavators add a rear counterweight swing zone; articulated machines add a crush area around the articulation joint; lifting machines add a load and fall zone.<\/p>\n  <p>The control is not simply &#8220;be careful.&#8221; A worksite should separate people and machines, define routes, create exclusion zones and use a trained spotter where visibility or manoeuvring requires one. Mirrors, cameras, alarms and high-visibility clothing support that system; none replaces it.<\/p>\n  <h3>An operator should stop when:<\/h3>\n  <ul class=\"nit-checklist\">\n    <li>someone enters the agreed exclusion zone;<\/li>\n    <li>the spotter disappears from view;<\/li>\n    <li>a signal is unclear or comes from several people;<\/li>\n    <li>dust, rain, glare or darkness removes safe visibility; or<\/li>\n    <li>the machine&#8217;s route changes without a new check.<\/li>\n  <\/ul>\n<\/section>\n\n<section class=\"nit-pg-final\" id=\"stability\" aria-labelledby=\"stability-heading\">\n  <p class=\"nit-pg-eyebrow\">Machine stability in plain language<\/p>\n  <h2 id=\"stability-heading\">Keep the combined weight and load inside the support area<\/h2>\n  <p>A machine stays stable while its combined weight and load remain within the support area provided by its wheels, tracks, stabilisers or outriggers. Raising, extending, swinging or tipping a load can shift that balance. A slope, soft shoulder, excavation edge or sudden movement reduces the margin further.<\/p>\n  <p>This is why operators must respect the machine&#8217;s load chart or operating limits, keep travel loads and attachments in the approved position, use stabilisers or outriggers correctly and work only on ground assessed for the task.
